Extemely unstable
My games never crash and they rarely freeze so why is it that this game does so every damn time I try to play. On top of the freezing and crashing I run into bugs everywhere like floating guns, inability to shoot or reload, and not being able to interact with anything. I've tried fixing the bugs by restarting my computer, uninstalling and then reinstalling, and verifying the game files, installing new drivers, and still the game kept freezing and crashing. Someone please help me understand how to fix this buggy mess of a game. Specs pasted below.

OS: Win10 | GPU: GTX 1660 | CPU: i7-9700F | RAM: 16 GB 2666 MHz | Storage: 2 TB Maxtor SSD

Edit: Following this link https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Metro_Exodus helped a bit and changing to DX12 was better in performance and stability so everything is fixed now.

Disable the games cloud sync because it's bugged, do it here:
Right click the game in the steam client, select Properties, select General tab, disable sync.
Maybe disable Ansel. And the GeForce overlay.

also try switching the directX mode if issues persist, I found dx11 more stable but I'm on a gtx 1070 (damn gpu prices).
Already on dx11 :steamsad:

The issues still persist, so now I'm pretty sure it's something up with my hardware.

Game crashes heavily in The Caspian level.

You have almost the same specs as me. I have a 97K & 1660ti and the game runs fine. Do other games run OK?

Ahh, maybe that's why. I'm still gonna see if I can fix up the freezing, if that's possible.

Most games run well but some games with intense system usage have some light stuttering and that's about it, but I rarely ever see crashing or freezing.

I played through repeatedly on ULTRA MAXED No Hair or PhysX and even played through once on EXTREME (same settings) without issue. The game does have some optimisation issues but your specs mean you have the grunt to handle them. I recently played through Detroit: Become Human, Control & Death Stranding all maxed and again without issue. (not boasting, they're just examples) If you're getting stutter in some other games too I'd be wondering what's running in the background? Out of curiosity, what resolution?

That's crazy that you can run games like that on pretty much the same hardware that I have, where as I can usually only run games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Metro Exodus on medium settings and only get around 75-80 fps. And normally I have google, discord, battlenet, voicemod, epic games launcher, wallpaper engine, and some tabs on google running in the backround. And my monitors resolution is 1920x1080.

OK, mine's 1080p too. I'd say it's all your background processes distracting your system. None of those mentioned should be loading at system boot and should only be started when you're going to use them and when you've finished using them they should be shut down again. You're not running a Cray mate, it's a simple desktop PC. Why do you need any of ' discord, battlenet, voicemod, epic games launcher, wallpaper engine, and some tabs on google' these to play this game? Multi-tasker are we?
btw; My refresh is 60hz & I cap it with VSync on FULL. Fast and smooth.

Yeah I guess I really don't need all of those open, gonna close all of the stuff that's using up all of my pc power then run a few tests and hopefully games will run alot better. Thanks for the help man.

Any GPU OC will cause crashes once you hit Caspian.
