Sam's Story - I didn't set traps and a question

I'm trying to figure out where to go next after talking to two scouts. There's 3 directions I can go:

1) A gang on the left
2) an islet in the middle with nightvision skull caches
3) a gang on the right that leads to a big building on the way to a tower that is supposed to be red but doesn't look red from my binoculars.

Which way do I go first?
I'd like to know which direction to prioritize, so I opened up a walkthrough.

*******
Turns out I never set traps for the Captain, I took the zipline and left, because I never saw anything to do with traps while I was there, and I was sick of watching the cutscenes with the captain.

Did I mess up the story by not setting the traps up?

*******

Side Note: if 4a ever makes another Metro games and doesn't put manual saves, I won't buy it. I can't recall the last open world game that is THIS BIG, to not give me the option of manual saves.

I nearly soft locked myself for the final battle of the main campaign. Worst decision ever.

There are manual saves when you're not using Ranger mode.

All saves are temporary. Once enough saves happen, the previous saves are overwritten.

You get 3 manual save slots, that is different than saying there are no manual save slots.

Also, they're only as temporary as you want them to be. You can make your own backups: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/backup-and-restore-in-windows-10-352091d2-bb9d-3ea3-ed18-52ef2b88cbef

Saves are overwritten as the game goes on.

Nobody is playing for 3 hours without saving

Nobody is exiting the game to back up save files in the middle of a gameplay session

Nobody can predict when the game is going to present a choice to affects the outcome of the future

A save file list is especially necessary for open world games.

You clearly didn't review the feature. You can have it save a copy every 15 minutes until the end of time. Therefore you could always roll back your saves.

>Nobody is playing for 3 hours without saving
The game has autosaves and manual saves, what does this even mean? 3 hours for what?

>Nobody is exiting the game to back up save files in the middle of a gameplay session
If you wanted to restore and load a save you had in the middle of a chapter, yes, you would.

>Nobody can predict when the game is going to present a choice to affects the outcome of the future
Welcome to Metro! This is entirely intentional, here is a quote from 4A about the karma system: "It is really important that the mechanics behind how the system works remain a mystery to avoid players trying to "game" or "cheat" the system. It's only when players are ignorant of the consequences of their actions can they truly make a free choice." This ain't Mess Effect where you simply choose red or blue, life is more complicated than that and morality always has shades of gray.

>A save file list is especially necessary for open world games.
The game is not open world, it was never advertised as open world. No one one these forums will claim the game is open world. There are larger levels, but the story is still mainly linear. This isn't Skyrim.
