Haven't played a Metro game before, is this the first one I should play?

I read online this is 2 games in one that had been remastered/remade.

If so, in terms of story, is this the first game I should play?

(I have a decent PC so not worried about playing older ones unless story matters.)

That is the order.

If you have an RT capable card on PC, use Exodus Enhanced Edition. Otherwise play the normal version of Metro Exodus.

I'm guessing he's somewhat referring to the books? But even then, that'll be news to me, on both accounts.

2035 is essentially its own story that picks some small pieces from LL and even fewer from Exodus. Though that is far from the statement that was made.

.. if I may? 2033 (the game) draws heavily from the original book. Last Light is almost nothing like 2034 and Exodus takes parts of 2035 to bring it's own story together. The games, like the books, are consecutive stories within their own particular respective series and 2035 and Exodus both are in no way compilations of their prequels.

Thanks for this, I will get it as a stand alone, and maybe go backwards if I want, cheers
