Damir not staying

During Caspian level I did almost everything to keep my karma high, did not kill a SINGLE slave, did almost all sequences with stealth. Yet Damir choose to leave. I only missed two slaves trapped in a cage during Water mission with him... is it really so difficult to get him to stay with the crew?

There are 8 or 9 karma points on Caspian.
Lighthouse mission (don't shoot slaves = 1 point)
Slave ships (release slaves at two slave ship locations = 2 points)
Water mission (release slaves = 1 point. And don't kill any = 1 point)
Baron mission (don't kill in slave quarters = 1 point. And stop two slave beatings = 2 points)
Photo for Guil (= ? - no visible karma point but it might be important)

I never release the water slaves and I skip one of the Baron beatings and he always stays with the Aurora.

Yes the road goes under the ship. There are I think 6 thug guards inside upstairs and taking them out, even lethally, gets a karma point though there are no cages to open. I guess the thinking is that by removing those guards then the slaves are free to leave.
Freedom of choice? Choice of freedom?
I actually didn't know he could stay. I thought it was just part of the story where he stays with his people and helps to fight their war. On the train, he talked about how he'd want to find his people and maybe relatives early on. At the end as well, if you walk to the back of the train where Krest is, he'll talk about how the team is good people, etc, and he praises Damir for choosing to stay and risk his life for his people.

To be honest, I actually prefer that. I think it fits the story well. Its not like the others where your actions end up getting Duke killed in a gunfight, or you get Alyosha wounded on the zipline. It feels like its more of a decision he made himself, not something you "caused" per se.

I just did my second run through. STILL couldn't get Damir to stay. So I came here hoping to find out what I did wrong.

Didn't know there were any slaves to release in water mission so apparently missed that.

But stopping the slave beatings during the final mission, HOW are you supposed to do that? I tried knocking the attacker out, but that just made everyone hostile, resulting in a huge shootout.

My oldest save allows to to go back to right before where the woman is being beaten. Should I just kill the guy and start the fight?

UPDATE: Turns out that was the right thing to do. And that was enough to get Damir to stay. Thank God. And you guys too :)

killed a lot of slaves but only when they were threatening, annoying or in a sandstorm, but also saved all i could, probably saved all

I never got him to stay and apparently most don't

But it's easy enough getting the other 3 and you only need 3 for arryom to live
