Why GeForce Exp does not recommend me DLSS ?
Hi

I have a Ryzen 3600X / RTX 2060 Super - 16GB ram 3200 (one stick) and on this game with RTX turned on ultra the game goes down to 45-50 fps when it seems to be the most demanding moments.

I'm not a pro when it comes to technical stuff and ray tracing, but I heard that DLSS is supposed to help RTX going smoother, so I was just wondering why Geforce experience does not recommend me to turn on that option since the game is not running permanently at 60fps (I have a 60Hz monitor so...) if someone can enlight me on this, that'd be appreciated.

Sorry Bengz, we were just grumbling. There are a couple people on this forum with astonishing tech knowledge and can easily offer better advice than myself especially about RTX which I haven't had the pleasure of yet, but I don't tamper a lot with games. 80% run well straight off for me using presets and maybe the occasional Custom and the other 20 I might tweak a little by either editing a config or using NVidia Control Panel.
With RTX you're in a whole other place but there are a few game optimisers out there you could try if you have the time and inclination. I can't recommend any because I haven't used one since I think it was GameBooster and I dumped that after about a month. As mentioned above, that GE can do a terrible job and it's my understanding it doesn't play nice with this game too but I could be wrong about that one. If I want to optimise a game I do what you're doing, scour a bunch of forums and websites for info. Good luck.

Not sure morbid is the right word ;p

It looks as you might expect, smudge-like.

Which is why 2.0 is so much better. Performance mode sees a small drop in IQ (but still better than 1.0) with a decent boost to FPS, or its quality setting can actually look even better while still giving some FPS.

I've got a 2070 with an i5 9600k and I'm getting pretty big FPS fluctuations, with High quality, DLSS and ray tracing. I was getting better performance at the start of the game, the open world is quite demanding. I'd say seeing drops to 50ish FPS sounds about right.

If you don't want to get too in depth with graphics settings, you can easily go with the Geforce Experience recommended ones and you'll get a good experience. You can also play around with the slider and move more towards "performance" if you prefer bigger frame rate (there's a wrench next to the "Optimize" button that allows you to do that). I usually start with the recommended settings and then optimise based on what I know gives me a bit better performance without a big quality hit.

Onto your DLSS question: as far as I understand, Exodus uses DLSS 1, which is the first DLSS implementation from Nvidia and wasn't great. What it *should* do is render the video at a lower resolution than the native one and then use an AI algorithm, specifically trained for this game, to upscale the video back to native resolution. What this would mean in theory is you would get the higher frame rate of rendering at a lower resolution, with the image quality of the high resolution, so best of both worlds. In practice, DLSS 1 had some artifacting issues (i.e. image quality was not as good as native resolution rendering) and didn't give as much of a boost to FPS as advertised. In Exodus it doesn't seem to do much at all actually, but I didn't bother doing a benchmark and comparison, there might be a slight performance increase.

DLSS 2 is a lot better from what I've seen, so keep an eye out for games coming out with that feature in the future, it's going to be a game changing feature.

Not sure I recognise that IQ tech reference or is that a subtlety? If it is I like it.

Not sure about recommending GE but Interesting interpretation. i'll add this one to my store of knowledge, thanks.

GE gives you a lot of functionality on top of performance optimisations and driver updates. You've got Ansel for taking pictures in game (in supported games at least), Freestyle for applying filters (similar to Reshade), instant replay and video capture and streaming with Shadowplay. If you're not using any of that, sure, it's not bringing any added value.

Yeah you're right, it's a nice toy, but aside from the occasional video I don't need most of what it supposedly offers. For video I go simple with BandiCam and screenshots are Steams department. As for performance 'optimisations' and driver updates, let's not quarrel, I've already stated my opinion on those.
