Quick question

What in the world is the counter in the corner of the screen? i see it every time it saves. It also shows up in the title menu. I don't think that ever got explained. And it confuses me.
Hope someone can shine some light on this weird mechanic i either missed or what ever...

It is the distance traveled in km, it also indicated a checkpoint/save.

The last part i picked up on fast, but the first part - it never occured to me that it was that.

when you pause the game it also shows the number with "km" after it. That's how I knew. Although at first I didn't believe they've travelled like 776 km already.... and the distances later on get even more crazy. I guess Russia is even bigger than I imagined
