How important is sniper rifle in Caspian?
I just got the sniper rifle from the tower and it is pretty inaccurate and cumbersome to use... is it worth lugging around for my time in the Caspian area or shall I...- stick to my guns - fwafwafwafwa

Beyond the gunfight I got into when reinforcements show up under the tower I never used it again and I was playing on hardcore.

the bear and a 15 shot semi auto mag

I only really benefited from the sniper rifle taking on the enemy sniper in the port crane at the end of an elevated roadway. Other than that, I only really used it for sniping at humanimals and lurkers at extremely long range. Felt more like a shooting gallery than anything that was life-and-death.

Outside of ^^those instances, you would probably be better off using that weapon slot for the best shotgun you can assemble.

The 'Shambler' shotgun, and either the Kalash, or the Bulldog, when it becomes available, and the Tikhar are all the weapons you'll ever need. The Kalash or the Bulldog, and even the Tikhar, all make for pretty good sniper rifles in a pinch.

It's useful as a battle rifle when you get the semi-auto conversion, but other than that I never got into an engagement that warranted a 6-power scope.

Ash shot is in my opinion the best room cleaner weapon at close range. Find the suppressor and heavy stock at the caspian sea to make it
I used the Valve whenever I possibly could in this game.

It's so wonderfully powerful and accurate, compared to the Tikhar which is much harder to use at long range due to it's lack of a good optic. Ball bearings also aren't as accurate, nor do they have tracers to let you see how much you need to lead your shot. It basically will one shot any enemy in the game, regardless of whether or not you dink someone in the head with it.

There is a lot of security in knowing you have a weapon that'll put down anything you aim it at in a single bullet, aside from a select few mutants.

The final version of the Tikhar, the Rail Gun, is pretty decent. All you have to do is make sure it gets pumped up every 20 shots or so and then every shot hits HARD. (Harder than the Valve imho.) The only real drawback is the lack of a 4x or 6x scope, but the Closed Reflex Sight isn't half-bad.

Speaking of scopes, also imho, the Night Vision scopes are an utter waste. You can't use them for diddly during the day, and at night the slightest flash of light will whiteout the entire sight picture. Given a choice between iron sights and the NV scope and I'd go with the iron sights.

Yeah the Hellbreath is a good weapon, but this guy just got the Valve in the Caspian.

You get the Hellbreath at the end of the game. He's nowhere near that yet. So it's kind of a m oot point to tell him about this when he won't have it for ages, and even when you do get it, it's for a short segment.

Ooo how do I get the rail gun upgrade? I love the Tikhar for sneaking around, cant argue with 1hit kil headshots but shoot any other part of an enemy and that thing is trash... More damage would be awesome.

and yeah I accidentally fitted a NV scope to Kalash I think and it was a terrible surprise in a mid day ambush.

From my experience the Valve is a bit too much of a one trick pony during the Caspian. It is either a sniper rifle or a high damage bolt action rifle. It is awesome on the shootout that follows after you clear the tower, and useful to kill demons (if you can hit them). Outside of that I only used it in the semi-auto config during the fight against the bear. I prefer the revolver, tihar, or helsing for sniping. They are silent/silenceable, more versatile, and their ammo is easier to carry or craft. And at least on low difficulty they deal enough damage and have a higher fire rate

The railgun is only available in the very last level when Artyom and Miller are in a different Metro, Miller will explicitly tell you to grab it. Just don't forget to take it before approaching Miller to continue the story. It is powerful but you are not going to use it for a long time except NG+.

You can get larger magazines for it. The five round magazine makes the Valve just ridiculous, and you can get an even larger magazine later. Used the Valve fairly heavily during ranger hardcore. Forget what all upgrades it was using, but with a little practice it worked excellent hipfired at close range too. Made it my go to weapon outside of situations where I was just expecting close range combat.
