Radio calls

During the story Artyom was called on the radio many times because his friends were worried. Why didn't he answer those calls? I do understand that the devs want to grant the player a real feeling in the game so that's why Artyom doesn't talk during the gameplay, but still..

He tried to answer (silently for the player as usual) but the radio connection was too weak.

I get this feeling the player is suppose to imagine Artyom talking instead of him actually being silent to all the other characters. Its good if you want to be imaginative but bad if you're looking for a cinematic experience; to be the observer.
