What to do in Ranger Hardcore if mask breaks??

I'm more than 3/4 through the dead city on ranger hardcore and my character is suffocating - the mask is broken and as far as I can tell there's no way to patch it. Do I have to chapter restart or what??

Does the game tell you this?? I broke my mask a few times and was never aware I could patch it on the fly.
