As a Metro fan this game is a big disappointment
The game is terrible and I can't believe it got positive reviews from Critics and player, I'm a big fan of 2033 and LL, I played them like 4 times each, got the remastered edition while I already had the original, I even read the book.

Please forgive my English as I'm a stupid French and we don't really learn this language at school here.

This game is such a disappointment, I was waiting for it a lot, with high expectation, and even apart of all the drama with the epic game store, it's a bad game. A very bad game.
I went on, played a good chunk of the game so I saw the majority of what the open world can offer

Frankly, it's terrible, no tension, writing and dialogues are poorly executed facial animations have not changed since 2033 which already had bad animations when it came out. Therefore the more "intimate" and narrative scenes during the phases in the Aurora absolutely not grow on me or get my interests as the dialogues and animations have 0 emotions, the game tried to be even more narrative but fail to deliver.

And as if the purely narrative phases were not boring enough. (I have nothing against games with a strong narrative aspect, but it is so poorly written.. It looks like an average FPS game trying to force his story into your throat) even the phases in OW are boring, as I suspected, and as with many games that have swapped their linearity for an Open World or Semi Open World (hello Mirror's Edge catalyst) all the rhythm and pacing is stabbed by an ultimately useless OW, with no other purpose as being a graphic showcase, being sometimes empty, sometimes a chore to cross (the first level the boat that takes 3 hours to use), besides spamming E in all the furnitures from a small abandoned house, to pick up objects (because in addition I really struggle to understand what is pickable or not) we do nothing more than in a linear game, only with a boring rhythm

The game still as some positive stuff, it's beautiful, the animations of the guns and hands of Artyom, unlike the characters, are very well made, the game still has that nice hardcore/survival twist if you play on higher difficulty, but frankly, apart from that, not only is it the worst Metro, but it's not even a good game, I'm really disappointed.

I'm not even going to talk about how the IA is so 2005, how the game is heavily scripted and feel like my hand is being talked of my keyboard every minute.

Another game overrated by the press, so they can stay on good terms with the publishers..

dont know i like the story and the gameplay but to each its own i guess im a bit sorry you didnt liked it because as a huge metro fun i can only imagine the disappointment you must feel
I'll agree it doesn't live up to previous titles (my personal opinion of the game) with story and atmosphere but calling it bad is a bit much. I still like it even though I'd prefer they stayed in the metro's.

How is it a metro when you no longer live inside the underground tunnel

There's still underground tunnels and even rail/metro structures thorough the game, just not much of the titular Moscow metro. And your team travels on a train, which is an outside metro.

The full title of this game is Metro EXODUS, which is title-speak for "no longer in the metro". So it narrowly escapes becoming an artifact title in spite of turning the premise on its head.

Besides, it's the franchise. Resident Evil doesn't suddenly call itself First Day On the Job At the Police Station Evil, or My Last Escape Evil or Rescuing the President's Daughter From Spanish People Evil.

I loved pevious games and love this one
but open world/sandbox maps have no tension, no feeling of oppressive danger, claustrophobic feel, a dark lugubrious refuge, filled with monsters,
inside the Metro, you really believe there is no hope, this is indeed the last refuge

surface in previous games are small but still scary and atmospheric

the thing is, the whole story of Metro is abut escape the Metro and go live on the surface, but that surface should be more full of fun intersting stuff to explore and enemies to fight, enemy humans, mutants, new anomalies,
enemy or friendly patrols

but this game is still a masterpiece

I liked the game overall, but thought the final chapter was worth it alone. I'm a sucker for messed up surreal ♥♥♥♥ like that.

How is this game a masterpiece when the Stalker series does everything better your described for the open world/sandbox world that Exodus is in?

I enjoyed the game, though I definitely don't think it's a GOTY contender like a lot of folk are pressing. It was fun, the story was okay (if predictable, which isn't necessarily a bad thing; Titanfall 2 was predictable but I still loved the story), and it was also a decent first attempt at an open world from 4A, with the very stellar "Metro" immersion boosting that further.

If nothing else, Exodus makes me look forward to 4A's next game/Metro title, because if it'll be an expansion on the Exodus formula (maybe with further developed/more open levels), it could be very interesting.
