Backup your save file
You can backup your save file and "when" your save game gets corrupted you can copy your backup into the main folder and it will work.. I just tried it and there was no issue.

Your save folder is under users/ (username) /saved games/ Metro exodus

Pin it to the side bar for quick access and after every major accomlisment or when you are done for a bit you should back up your save file. The game is hella buggie and you will have an issue.

Or you can just backup user.cfg and boot into safe mode after crashing

And you can make multiple checkpoint saves and use them to start the game in your favorite places throughout all the chapters. And it avoids the long character dialogues at the start of chapters. The drawback is having to replace the saves directory with one of your backup saves directories before you start the game for every time you change checkpoint saves.

Just remember to backup the desired checkpoint save soon after you save it in the game. Like tabbing out to do the backup of your saves directory or exiting the game and backing up your saves directory. And you can give names to each backup to tell which is which like a Volga Checkpoint or Taiga Checkpoint and so on.

I back up all the saves in the saves directory into a backup folder because trying to pick out just one checkpoint save could get tricky. I guess you could just use the date/time to find the latest checkpoint save but to me it's just easier to backup the whole saves directory.
