Exploration is garbage in this game...
The exploration is total crap. Theres plenty of loot to be found including upgrades, crafting mats and weapon parts, but it is SUCH a nuisance to get around.

In Volga there are only like 5 boats for the entire region, they dont respawn and stay wherever you leave them. The handling is beyond terrible, going in reverse is a nightmare and there are a myriad of invisible barriers when you get even remotely close to shore or props floating in the water.

As if it wasnt bad enough to slog in a janky boat that cant handle for crap and moves at 2 mph, theres a giant fish monster who will incessantly stalk your every move and insta-kill you when it gets close. Combine this with the fact that youll be getting stuck every 20 seconds because a piece of floating driftwood has a massive invisible barrier you get snagged on, and it makes for an exceedingly tedious and frustrating experience.

You cant swim, going into the water is an RNG roll of the dice between jumping back on land or getting insta-killed by God knows what. The entire map has sections cut off by more WATER. Which necessitates slogging in the asininely designed boat. Exploration is constantly cut off by technical and gameplay design barriers.

Anyone else feel this way?

What I really don't like is that just six inches from the shore is instantly water over your head EVERYWHERE.
agree with this.

i usually just take land anyways. i like being able to see and engage threats with my weapon ready. you just hinder yourself by taking the boat.

And you will die if you jump from 10 fit or higher. Overall a bad exploration experience.

Yeah how silly is that? I get that it is trying to be realistic but a slow drop of 3 meters kills you? This is a soldier that is trained for war, not a 75 year old grandpa. Bad thinking really. But because I like to be immersed in the environment in open or semi open worlds, I don't really rush for exploration. I take my time and enjoy the scenery, that's why slow navigation on uneven terrain is not bugging me really.

Having just finished the main story I think the game has a very strange approach to exploring. On some of the maps exploring will reward you with a much more stealthy path to take, or a route bypassing at least some of the enemies. In other maps exploring is heavily punished as it inevitably ends up using far more ammunition than you ever make up for with crafting parts recovered. I think this element of the game would have felt a bit more consistent if the dev team had settled on one approach - a 'stealthy' path that you could find but that has few resources or a more difficult path that has more resources but that requires much more skill and patience and which involves much more danger. They sort of did that with the valley but not so much elsewhere.
Between exploring the Volga, Caspian, and forest, I disliked exploring the Volga the most.

one _should_ be able to grab a floating log or life preserver ring and just dogpaddle across .

This would be an amazing mechanic in Volga. Imagine having to cross the water clinging to a log, very slowly because of the weight of the weapons etc, half sinking, with water all over the screen and heartbeat in the headphones, and you get out to find out none of your weapons are working. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I got chills.
Exploring may be difficult but it's important. You can find rare weapon upgrades and attachments.
At the starting of Taiga i found a night vision scope and a multi arrow crossbow in the basement of a building. Without exploration i would not have found them.

That's exactly why people are complaining. The artificial difficulty is more overdone than a steak at Denny's.

Outside of a couple of scripted moments like rowing to the church you never need to use the boat to get around the Volga. The only POI that requires it is the ghost shack island, other then that everywhere can be gotten to on foot.
Don't call it a ghost shack island.

It's a sunken clinic. And a lot of suffering occurred there. Or is that not something you care about?

Exploring or looting could be more alike in previous games, specially in Metro 2033 but I miss mostly about the idea of being interactive the background world. WHOA! That sure was great in Metro 2033.
The introduction Moscow is so lame to interact.
