I was kind of hoping that the game, being as, frankly, brutal as it is compared to the previous metro games, would add in leaning. Though I question how useful blind fire would be in a game where ammo is so precious.

My main complaint with the gunplay has to do more with, now, in the far open areas, it's annoyingly hard to get a scope especially early on. It is also pretty annoying that your "sniper" weapon for the early sections, the Tikhar, doesn't get a scope, and it is honestly really difficult to land shots at a distance with it, since its basically impossible to tell how much you need to lead your shot as ball bearings have no tracers. It's also not as accurate as it's been in previous games, and enemies immediately notice if you miss a shot that goes by their head. Not that it matters since the Tikhar basically won't kill if it's not fully charged, it seems weaker than in previous games but I haven't played last light in a while either.

Also, some structures have really bad hitboxes, to the point where enemies can shoot through them but I can't. Mostly stuff like fallen antenna arrays and such.

Speaking of enemies...they're so accurate. And why are their shotguns freaking sniper rifles when mine doesn't have any where near that range?

I'm finding Exodus brutal too.

Combat is so tricky that the flow of Exodus is broken up. However I am playing on 'hardcore difficulty'. I could reduce that to 'normal difficulty'.

The biggest point to take from Exodus though, is that it gets easier as you play on. As you start collecting upgrades for weapons and equipment. As you learn how to avoid mutants more successfully.

Secondly, I have found that by keeping the pistol and the rifle, I have no real close-quarter weapon. (I am only fifteen hours in though, and still in Volga. Although a bit of that time was not playing.) I have just seen it recommended that you keep a shotgun at all times. I was thinking about that point myself at some point, but forgot it.

It means that a group of humanimals are a pain in neck, rather than one shot shotgun kills. Unless I can snipe with my silenced pistol.

Update.

Combat got lots better. Just needed to collect a few weapon upgrades.

What's bad though, is human-mutants taking up to ten shots to kill. While Artyom is wearing armour and he can die in one or two swipes from those enemies.

Humanimals should die in one headshot from any weapon. I find the AK is the easiest to do it with. If you sneak up on them, throwing knives or a shot from the Tikhar are one hits.

One shotgun hit also does them in. The ashot with double barrel will save your life in Volga from those bastards

I really like the gunplay in this game. But two things make me hate fighting: Human AI & the ridiculous amount of collision errors. Especially the later is frustrating when you line up a headshot just to see the bullet hit an invisible wall.

In this game you can hide from enemies in the dark areas while using silent weapons. Good luck doing that in other games.

Most of them die from one fire bullet.

My only grip with the gunplay is that the Tihar rifle cannot be switched out early on when its almost useless. Very much prefer the silenced revolver because higher base damage and I dont have to pump it with air.

Also I always have an Ashot to deal with monsters in one shot. Its also great against everything in close quarters. Monsters, once aggroed, move too erratically to reliably get a headshot. This means the easiest and most economical way to take them down quickly is with the Ashot.

I would not call the Tihar as worthless, it has fire bullets which can one shot most Huanimals and all normal spiders.

You get the rail gun attachment at the last level where you can kill the blind ones with it.

well i made a bloodbath in the church at the beginning, gave me lots of ammo, a double barrel shotgun, i could turn by silenced pistol in a silenced bastard with the 30 bullet mag

wasn't fan of the tikar to begin with, but being able to craft ammo for cheap is a big big plus at the start. and once you start raiding the bandits camp, you swim in ammo as long as you take them out quickly. And sometime you're better using a hsotgun shell from the start than wasting other type of ammos. Also throwing knives, even heavily armored guys, throw, close the gap and stab to death. That gunplay is different, but damn it's effective

Yeah I realise headshots are what's needed in Exodus. You can't always get a headshot though.

The point I was making was about how (on Hardcore difficulty) the balance between Artyom and enemies makes guns feel useless. Up to ten shots to drop one humanimal enemy, that can kill in up to two swipes.
