Can surrendering enemies be trusted?

I'm on the first level, and a few of the church brothers militant have surrendered, I don't really want to knock them out or kill them, not really for any ending purposes, but mostly out of roleplay purposes.

If I leave them alone when surrendered, will anything happen? Will they pick up their weapon again and shoot me if I turn my back on them?

I'm pretty sure they fight if you leave them too long. Knocking them out, so long as you do the actual takedown and not just gun bashing, doesn't effect anything.

Yes, you can trust them, i never got attacked by someone who surrendered. If you come back later while the same mission, they still sit there.

pumpgun_paeda seems to be right, I allnighted this game until I passed out and had the same experience
