Has anyone gotten past the turret section when you find Steve, the Quinkin expert?

I've been stuck at this point since I was a kid and have never gotten past it, any tips?

you have to spam the rang button that means press the rang button rapidly to kill the quinkan with it

also make sure to keep looking up, left and right alot because the ships like to go where ur not looking.
