All three of the TY games are great, and should be played by all. Great examples of 3D platformers that aren't afraid to try some new and different things.
Ty 2 and Ty 3 didn't really have that. You could have almost any boomerang you wanted whenever you wanted. No more getting one you didn't like or havng the suspense wondering what you could possibly get next.
A lot of what I thought were new, interesting ideas in Ty 1 I would later learn were actually done first in Banjo-Kazooie, such as not getting kicked out of the level after getting the main collectible, having four little dudes to find that give you another of said collectible if you find them all, and collecting exactly 300 of a particular collectible to get another of the main collectible. That said, what I did like was that the other characters didn't know why you wanted the Thundereggs so badly and thus had a good reason to be stingy with them, which isn't the case in a lot of collectathon platformers, where instead everyone knows darn well you need those things to save the world and just go full jerk and take advantage of the situation.
Ty 2 has a bit more of an identity, and it keeps the jokes and light tone from the first game, which I hear 3 doesn't, but know from experience that 4 does. I don't like how you always spawn in Berumungee no matter where you were when you turned the game off, though, and especially not how far away said spawn point is from the Fourbie. What I do like is how well the loading screens are disguised, and the big areas there are to explore. Bullying baddies with Bunyips and the likes of the Deadlyrang is super fun, and you're not going way out of your way to get every gosh diddly darn Opal in every level. The kart racing is absolutely atrocious though, no sugarcoating it.
4 isn't bad or anything but lol come on now
So probably Ty 2. Can't see Ty 3 becoming my new favorite since I hear the kart racing isn't optional. Seriously, what the heck. Every single Ty game I've played is also missing a way to see how many collectibles you are missing in a given level without entering said level, though this isn't as much of an issue in 2 as it is in 1 and 4.
If there's one thing I think Ty 1 did better than Ty 2, it's giving every collectible a purpose besides 100% completion. The Rainbow Scales double your health, the Thundereggs move the plot forward, the Cogs get you new Rangs, and everything else gets you more Thundereggs.
Ty2 was next, huge game, but to me was a little more dull, and when I beat the game, to me finding all collectables was boring. but the interactive burramagee town, was awesome, I just wish there were little side chalanges there
Ty3 I see alot of positive reviews, but I personally didn't like the theme, you pretty much don't use boomerangs in that game, even though the rang conscept was good... and I felt like the game was ruined :(
This huge open world, and yet the game somehow manages to be shorter than its predecessor. It also has one of the same problems Ty 4 does: So many things to buy that cost so many opals that you're going to assume you'll have time to save up for it all only to be blindsided by the sudden, unexpected ending.
The complete lack of an explanation about where the heck Ty got a Shadow Bunyip, or what the heck that even is, doesn't help. The Ty series just isn't allowed to explain things well, is it?
I do agree with you on that. I remember TY 2 being much bigger, and a much harder game, back when I was a kid, but then i started playing through all those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ helicopter missions, which took up at least 30% of the missions, meaning that 30% of the game is already crap.
However, I really love this style for TY, just being able to drive everywhere, I personally find it quite fun, and it's a very good way of having a TY game.
TY 1 had more "TY" levels, which is a big factor for me.
1's story has better pacing than 2 and 4, though story pacing has never really been Ty's strong point in any game. In 2 and 4, you're just doing stuff for people until someone's like "Holy crap Ty we gotta take down Boss Cass here's a new thing to do it with now GOOOOOOO!" Whereas in Ty 1 you're always after the same goal. At least, compared to 4, I was able to tell just what that last-minute power-up did. Now that I've looked it up I know that the Infinirang slows the opponent down (why such a hyped up name if it's just the Chronorang?) but I was never able to tell, and more importantly, it had absolutely nothing to do with how I went about taking down Boss Cass.
Neither 2 nor 1 have good bosses. Buster could have been great but instead it's just looking at the sunset until he roars at you and then pushing the Rang button. At least have him open when he does something he has a reason to? I mean, when you're against a boss made up of nanobots, you'd expect a more nonstandard way to take him down then "wait until he does the thing he has no reason to then push button." Like, how about picking off the nanobots in quick succession when they scatter, perhaps by biting them, leaving the core more and more open? The fight against Fluffy in 2 and the one against Boss Cass in both games were all right, but the other ones range from eh to ugh.
The thing which makes TY 2 what is it, is the TY levels. Buramudgee is just so fun to explore, as well as levels such as The Never Never, and that volcano mission, just massive areas to explore, with tonnes of TY related missions to do, which is where TY 1 was strongest. It had the most TY missions, getting to walk around and explore the place, however I did not like the levels as much, as I found there were less to do, and explore, when TY 2 TY levels were just better, but thats just my opinion.
That being said, whenever I play Ty 1 I want to play Ty 2 purely because there's more content, but when I play Ty 2 I can't help but want to go back to 1. I think it's because I just want more of Ty 1, but it's already the perfect length.
Ty 2 feels really weirdly paced, and a lot of the game's length comes from filler activities. Driving was really slow and there were things on the road to slow you down even more, levels were really spread out and objectives took ages to find, even Sly's shop took ages to get to, so upgrading your boomerangs took ages.
Ty 2 really overstayed its welcome in my opinion, there were parts I just really didn't want to do, such as the flying missions. There were times when I really just wanted it to be over, and collecting everything seemed absolutely crazy to me. Ty 1 had nothing I really wanted to skip, the most filler-like activity was simply walking around the levels, and collecting everything was just more gameplay.
I never got to play Ty 3, I don't think it was released in Europe, but I did emulate it to see what it was like and it seems interesting enough, although the emulator didn't work correctly with it.
