Ty 3 Discussion
So with the release of Ty2 getting close, I kinda want to look back at 3. Why do you guys feel it wasn't as good as the first two? I had all 3 as a kid and loved them all, but 3 was always kind of the black sheep to me. Let's talk about what we liked and didn't like about it. Hell, thic might be nice for the devs to look at once we get some replies.

Oh, yeah, the close quarters boomerang melee stuff. I though it was okay, but wasn't as satisfying as just using the rangs. I kinda wish they left biting as the only melee, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

I think it's because the formula of TY, along with it's charm, was going slightly stale at that point; TY3 was far from bad (in fact it had quite a lot of polish, controlled pretty well, and looked great), but people remember TY2 more simply because of how much it innovated TY1s formula. By comparison, the jump from TY2 to TY3, while noticeable, wasn't nearly as much as before. The main difference was the ability to add elemental powerups to your rangs, which was essentially another undeeded collectable. Otherwise, the vehicle mechanics were very similar, the characters changed very minimally/ were't expanded on, the sidequesting was almost identical to TY2 and most importantly, the more open world style was the same as TY2s (Of course, the story was also different, but that's a moot point in terms of gameplay); What you ended up with was something that was certainly TY, but with less gameplay innovations and a lot more little addons that felt as if they had been inspired by more generalized AAA titles. While this of course wasn't a bad design choice in any way, it still could leave you with a plastic-y taste in your mouth if you were a veteran of the series.

I think all of that was a result of how the devs pumped it out in about a year and it's based on a modified Ty 2 engine. The innovative leap was much smaller because less time was spent on it if you ask me.

Personally, if we're going to see a Ty 5, I'd like to see a mix of all three games into one, using what worked best for each in one whole, delicious package.

I definitly agree. Bigger open world, more rangs, better graphics, all that good stuff. I'd imagine it'd have graphics like the new Crash Bandicoot remastered trilogy. Cartoony but still sharp and realistic looking.

TY 3, at least for me, was an attempt to, er, "three up" TY 2, while following the trend of the year of release, which was Darker and Edgier, which did not play out well for games that did that. While it was much more tame than, say, Shadow the Hedgehog, it was literally darker than 2, and the narritive... I'm still confused on how exactly long Ty and Shazza were in the Dreaming, or if the trip back had some weird time dilation effect. Then zombie frills. And essentially demons. And Dennis became a general (Sorry, no, The General, a man who is feared and revered, but beardless.) And another Thylacine that made part of the pseudo-plot of TY1 irrelevant (as Ty was said to be, like, the last Thylacine since his family was sucked into the Dreaming, Sly not counting), who exists for 5 minutes and has nothing more to do (I'm actually surprised Krome recorded more lines for Ridge after the attack on... that town who's name I can't spell). Some oddly mandatory kart racing. Hexaquin boss battle. Shazza gets kidnapped, then Fluffy shows up in a mech. Boss Cass is still pathetic when he's not actively trying to kill you. Look for parts of a long lost Macguffin that's supposed to be the ultimate weapon against the Quinkan, and have a cutscene that a few people read as subtext between Fluffy and Ty (not making that up, check the series' TV Tropes page). Another kart race made infuiating due to having to collect 6 items and finish in first, a feat harder than it sounds. Go fight the Quinking, who pulls a mirror match fight that doesn't really work because his AI was awful. Boss Cass double crosses you and tries to kill Ty and the Quinking. Fluffy takes the bullet, dies. Memorial statue is put up in her honor in the TY 2 version of the first town of the game. The End.

Mechanically, it was a bit of a swing and a miss. Yeah, the rangs were upgraded with the elemental stones so you could make your own whatever-rang, but by the time you got enough of the ones you wanted to get the right combination, you've already gotten 2/3rds through the game, and the level design is too vague to clue you in to what you need, let alone that there's even anything there to collect. The Crabmersible was a fantastic improvement over the Fourbie (at least that's what I think the truck in TY 2 was called) and was actually fun to drive around in, shooting the bejesus out of those airships, and wasn't dull to get around in. The Kart racing was pretty much the same as TY 2, but the AI was a bit cheaper with items. Bunyips were also improved, though I do sorta wish the upgrades were something you actually collect versus one-stop shopping through a character who introduces herself as if we've actually seen her before. Then there's the much toted (as in, it was in a lot of the gameplay trailers) of close-rang combat. It, uh, was pretty missable. As in, you could go almost the whole game never bothering to fight a Quinkan close up. Plus, most Quinkan just blocked you, so you just wound up biting them to death like any other enemy, and even the Shadowrang, the thing you spent the middle of the game putting together, while it could kill a Quinkan in one or two hits, would still be blocked and couldn't be modified.

Graphically, it looked very good, even on GC. Shadows looked a step behind the remaster of TY 1, neatly. Though most of the game was as expected of it's DoR, it did have some rather smooth textures when you weren't expecting them. And, while it's not much of a graphical thing, per se, it had some of the smoothest animations I've seen BY FAR.

TY 3 is a bit of a mixed bag, because it had just as many bad points as there were good, and the rest was sorta... in the middle. I'm not sure if this rambling counts as my opinion, but it's... more of a critique.

Nah man I know what you're saying. I remember way back in the day when I had all the of the games. At one point, I lost Ty2 and accidentally broke my Ty1 disc by running it over with a rolling chair, so all I had left to play was 3 since I didnt really get an allowance. Just like you said, I used to love the Crabmersible. It was for sure my favorite part of the game, which tties in to the other part of the game I really liked, which is the fact that it was dark in the open world a lot. It looked really nice. I used to love the level Bridge on the River Ty level just because of its dark lighting and chill music, so driving about in the main world was really fun.
The one thing I didnt enjoy, like you said, was the fact that it got edgier. Reminds me of when (I think it was Activision) gave Crash Bandicoot tatoos and whatnot. It looked really dumb, and it just made you miss the old, classic Ty. Nothing but the classic swim trunks, gloves, and little-red-scarf-thingy, opposed to the black shorts and weird wristbands. If they ever do make a Ty5, which I really hope they get the money to do, I hope Ty will look just like he did in 1. Really brings the charm back somehow. Kinda like how in Super Mario Sunshine, you're super used to seeing Mario wear the F.L.U.D.D, but when you do one of the platforming levels, he doesnt have it on, and he just looks right again. I don't know, I feel like I'm talking out of my ass at this point, but you get the picture.

I hate what they did with Sly. In the first game, he looked and acted badass. He still kinda looked pretty cool in the second game too. But in Ty 3, he just started to look like... well... creepy! He went from a cool looking character to a psycho who always looks paranoid!
