similar games
why i need a similar game:
so, i remember i played this game a lot when i was younger. now i have a newer os and the game does not work anymore, i always get the message "reboot computer to complete installation" but when i do that and then try to play the game, i just get the same message again. it is probably a conflict between windows 10 and the copyright-protection-software that this game uses. but that is not really the topic.

my favorite thing about this game:
what i want to say is, i can't play this game anymore, but i really liked it, so i want to know about similar games. what i liked most is that i can build my own army between battles and all my guys get xp and become stronger during the war, if i manage to keep them alive. so far, i have not seen this in any other game. there is one exception, a game called "end war" which does things a little bit similar. in that game, you cannot choose which troops you want to have in your army, and dead ones get automatically replaced by a lvl 1 unit of the same type. but they still get xp and become stronger if you keep them alive.

my least favorite thing about this game:
what i didn't like so much is that there was no way to do skirmish battles with my own army. comparing this to end war again, in this case end war did it better. there was still only campaign, but you were able to always choose from a few different missions on the world map and depending on which mission you chose, you could make the game last for eternity, always winning every battle, but choosing your battles in a way that would never let you win the war.

additional info about what exactly i am looking for:
now, what i am looking for is this: i want a game with the same (or a very similar) troop management system. i want to choose which troops i want to use, between battles, and i want to be able to let them gain experience and become stronger, if they don't die. i'd also like an implementation of this system into a skirmish-like mode, where i can fight for as long as i want (or at least for a very very long time) before the war ends and i am forced to either abandon my army and start over or replay the last mission over and over.

additional end-stuff-things:
i am aware that such a game probably doesn't exist, but i would like to hear about some games that at least come close to what i described. especially important for me is the army management. that should be exactly like it is in this game.

thanks for the suggestions.

do you have the game on cd or do you have it on steam? if the steam version works, then the issue is probably like i thought. the cd has a bad copyright protection software which wants to change some things that windows prevents for safety reasons. if you have cd and it works with windows 10 then i would be interested to know if you had to do anything to make it work or if it just worked without any issues.

Then you want Rush for Berlin. Made by the same people and uses the same gaming engine and plays the same way. Also if you are using 2 hard drives, try installing it to the other one. Or have you tried running it in Compatibility Mode windows xp 2?

compatibility mode does not work. it is already installed on my other harddrive because my main harddrive is an ssd that i use only for the os (and unfortunately some stuff that demands being put on C:/ for some random reason, like savegames for most games - can't they just create the savegame folder in the install-directory?)

thanks for the suggestion, i will probably add this game to my wishlist.

If you want a game like Codename Panzers, you wont find anything closer than Rush for Berlin. Panzers Phase One and Two are among my favorite games of all time and that game is as close you will come to the Panzers games.

oh yeah rush for berlin... i forgot that
but looks like sudden strike 4 is spiritual successor to codename panzers, i just played it and it is pretty much codename panzers 4 :)

if u cant run panzers on win 10 thats propably an OS problem, i had problem on phase 2, with visual c++ redist and after fixing it,it worked
(disable msi afterburner/geforce experience and steam overlay, if still not working)

Have you guys tried using different .exe files other than what is installed? Hopefully you understand what I'm saying since I can't actually say what I'm talking about considering what using a different exe file is considered in most cases even though I'm talking about it in terms of just trying to get a game runningg that you paid for.

yeah, i thought about acquiring a version that is delivered without problematic copyright protection software, but i currently live at a place where the internet access doesn't allow torrenting.

detailed explanation: I study programming and live in a dormitory close to where i am studying. internet access is provided by my university. the advantage is that i always get about 10 mb/s (sometimes a little less, but never below 7 mb/s). the disadvantage is that i am not connected to the internet directly. connection goes through the leibnitz rechenzentrum (leibnitz computing center) via the münchner wissenschaftsnetzwerk (munich scientific network). for "security reasons" they completely block all internet access for 15 minutes as soon as any form of torrenting is detected (obviously, that means they're doing it to stay out of legal trouble, but i can't blame them). so no torrents for me untill i move somewhere else and get a private internet access.

You dont need to get a torrent to get an exe for any game. There are sites, 1 inparticular I use, site starts with mega. Or you can private chat with people like me that can upload them to other sites that store files.

huh. probably should check that out. as you can probably tell, i'm not really experienced in the aquisition of certain software. lol

Im not advocating anything illegal to be clear but if someone pays for a game, then cant play it, I see no problem using other exe files that may help that person run the game.

of course. if i buy a car, then it breaks, i will also try to fix it and make it work again before i start to think about buying a new one. it is all normal and completely acceptable.

A few developers who worked for Stormregion worked on Sudden Strike 4 and the game feels similar to Codename Panzers except there are no "hero" units and there is no story except the historical context.
