But i know this game and have it since years - IF Steam didnt fix the worst problem, he is right - the Money-bug - if it still exist, you cannot play a "long" game, you can only win, when you play fast...
The Money bug is the problem, that at 2G money it changes tio -2G money and therefore you loose automatically, even, if you normally have no problems and should win...
here is the website. lots of mods and patches to chose from to fix the game for you. follow the instructions.

But maybe i try it one day again ;)

In order to play MoO3 well you have to experiment, and discover, through trial and error and discern what works and what doesn't work.
Infact it requires experience, to actually be played well.
That is not something that this modern age of "gamers" has a large percentage of, because it requres being challenged to the fringe of your ability to think critically.
For those of us that relish that, and the thousands of games yet to be played of MoO3 on "impossible" setting, each finished match is its own reward.
The AI knows how to cheat just enough to keep you struggling. And when you show the AI you know what you are doing, you are in for a rough ride all the way to the end.
Bit of a shame you don't seem to have played MoO3 at all. It's a badly balanced (nothing can really win against mass fighters/missiles except more mass fighters/missiles as the lightning field generator was turned into a beam weapon instead of an AoE field), buggy (or maybe reseach topics going from taking 6 turns to be done to takng 150,000 suddenly is a feature?) and tedious micromanaging game (you can let the AI do it but it won't be as good as if you bothered to fiddle with hundreds of DEA zones every 10 turns).
Also the AI sucks, I played it last year and one of the AIs declared war on me and offered me an upgraded trade deal in the same turn. Also also, the Harvesters. Great, I sure do love the race I created being eaten by the harvesters and the only thing I can do about it is to give the planet to other empire so I can genocide every living thing there and start again. Also times 3, it sucks that darloks, mrrshan ect. were all but killed off.
It's an awful game and you should feel bad for saying it isn't.
But always my empire got too big.
I have the problem of too much income, which change to extreme amount of negative income due to the money bug and loose the game always FAR before i evengot the stellar converter.
I wanted to research and build and use it once, but all tried ended in "bankrupt" loss, because i had too much money income, which went to negative mones :(
