Give it time, you'll get better.
If you want a tips, though...
-Creative: Don't bother trying to pick a tech when you can have them all. A great crutch for new players vs AIs.
-Try Silicoid: You get to straight ignore two aspects of the game (food and pollution), while you focus your attentions only on industry and science.
-Charistmatic: Make friends with all the races. They'll be less likely to attack you. I have a video showcasing the power of charistmatic.

I used to play this game in my sleep way back in the day. I make my own race now. I use others would like to play with me
Try something like repulsive, -ship defense and -ground combat to get to +20 pts. Then try creative, subterranean, unification or creative, subterranean, +1 research, +1 production. Or creative, democracy, +1 research, rich home world. If you're experienced enough to go non creative something like lithivore, democracy, +1 research is very strong.
I prefer to play creative. You only need a handful of systems really. Your planets will be stronger than the AI but focus on getting rich or ultra rich ones. Then once you terraform them get like hyper x capacitors and mega fluxors plus a modded up beam weapon and you will tear through the AI ships.
