Master of Orion 2

Master of Orion 2

Useful Guides
I'm just learning how to play the game and think it'd be good to collect useful guides. So far...

- http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/197873-master-of-orion-ii-battle-at-antares/faqs/72470 - very detailed txt file explaining many aspects of the game - ship building strategies, techs etc.
- http://masteroforion2.blogspot.ru/2005/03/master-of-orion-ii-strategy-guide.html - a shorter overview than above and in a more readable html format.
- http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion_II:_Battle_at_Antares/Hotkeys - helpful keyboard hotkeys.
- http://www.spheriumnorth.com/orion-forum/nfphpbb/index.php - forum with many Q&As, strategy guides etc.
- https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/starting-strategy-moo2.316450/ - discussion of starting strategies for the first 100 turns.
- http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion_II:_Battle_at_Antares - very helpful detailed, easy to navigate series of webpages.

Great - I'll add those above! Ah yes, right click. So simple!!!
Best guide I found from way way back is just to go through the forum at Civfanatics. I seem to remember them having a a forum devoted to MOO2, but I can't find it now. You might have to look around. Here's one thread.

Remember, you can rightclick EVERYTHING for more details.

Things experienced players take for granted:
-Industry has diminishing returns due to pollution. Try to keep a balance of food/industry/science for best results.
-Research Laboratory is the most important tech in the game. Get it first.
-Do not put different types on weapons on ships. Commit to beams or missiles, but not both on the same ship.
-Do not refit your whole fleet at the same time. The CPU will assume you have no army and all declare war on you at once.

The MOO forum was unfortunately merged into this forum about a year ago.

Until missles are less effective late game, when AI or Human ships have higher missile evasion and technologies such as Lightning Shield or Anti-Missle Rockets, then beam weapons will generally tend to do more damage per X unit installed on a ship. :)
And there's nothing wrong with that. If you're at turn 500, you're probably using beam ships. If you're at turn 50, you've probably got a host of mirv nuke frigates. The point of that post was to mention that both missiles and beams do not belong on the same ship.

-A battleship with 10 plasma cannons, battle scanner, hyper-x capacitors, and high energy focus
or
-A battleship with sensors researched, and 10 eccm/fast/emg/mirv zeon missiles
or
-A battleship with ground combat techs researched, stasis beams, and assault shuttles
is better than
-A battleship with 10 plasma cannons, 10 zeon missiles, and 3 assault shuttles
(numbers pulled out of my butt for convenience)
