The plot of chapter 1 was easy to follow, even though there was no explaination whatsoever about anything. Was I supposed to make some great deduction based off of it?
You are not expected to deduce the entire plot now, however, you are expected to try it, as the writer says in one of the afterparties (and it's much better reading this way). As you probably know, Higurashi is divided in Question Arcs (EP 1-4) and Answer Arcs (EP 5-8). As you read and gather more information, you will be able to think in more possibilities. When you finish EP 4, I strongly recommend you to stop and try to elaborate a theory that can answer what you saw until then. Starting on EP 5 until EP 8, you will be slowly introduced to most of the answers.
