Serious Sam 3: BFE

Performance on Macbook Air
Right. For starters: This is possibly the best FPS i've played for several years. If it moves, shoot it, if it doesn't move, shoot it anyway. Awesome!

However: I *can* get a smooth 60 fps, but then the game doesn't exactly look good (that wrist thing, for instance, is just a white coil, instead of the awesome blue-ish beam).

I'm on a never (only 1 year old) macbook air, and it more than meets the requirements for SS3.

1.3 GHz intel Core i5
4 GB memory
Intel HD5000 graphics
120 GB SSD

Anyone know how to tweak the settings so i get a good performance, while also having graphics that doesn't hurt the eye?

I've thought about moving the game to an external SSD (i figure that with USB 3.0 i can easily run it off of there) but what problems would that solve, apart from freeing up space on my own HD?

I'm running the game natively on OS/X if it helps anything.

And in case the developers read this: Keep it up! Serious Sam is a timeless classic! Thanks for making a game which does NOT boil down to "hey! let's all look down ironsights!"

This is not the wrong place, no reason to apologize.

I'm just not sure what I could say to help you, so I was hoping some of the users that play on OSX can chime in with their experience.

In general, unfortunately, OSX performance is always somewhat slower than Windows performance on same hardware, due to the fact that OSX has very old OpenGL drivers. Changing the disk will probably not bring anything, as most part of performance edge stems from the GPU.

Regarding visuals "hurting the eye", I suppose you've been playing on "lowest" setting? Or? Perhaps setting it to "low" and just manually turning a few things off might help. Or the opposit - use "lowest" as the basis, just enable dynamic shadows. That is usually the biggest visual improvement, though it does cost quite a bit of performance. But it's hard to tell without actually testing it on your machine. So you have to see for yourself which combination works best for you.

I'm on a Mid-2011 MBA, 1.8GHz i7 with 4GB of RAM, an SSD, and an HD3000, and while I can get it to run – no crashes or categorical problems like that – it does not run well. Maybe 15-30 FPS on average, I think, at a middling resolution (1024xsomething widescreen ratio) "Playable" but not playable, if that makes any sense.

Disappointing, but obviously going to hold Croteam accountable for my failed attempts to play games on a 3-year-old MacBook Air lol.

Well, if the GPU is an Intel one, you can be lucky it is even working at all. :) The store page says for Mac specs: "Intel integrated GPUs are not supported.". That's because we had a lot of problems with Intel driver on Mac, so if it works - it's a miracle in itself. :)

Don't know about the GPU..
Also: Pretty cool that the devs themselves comment here!
For anyone else interested, who is also on the same computer as me, i find that disabling various kinds of light (dynamic, bloom, etc) vastly improves my FPS while still allowing for some pretty good looking textures.

@AlenL: As i said in the OP: This is one of the most enjoyable games i've played in a long long time! I mean, it rivals fable TLC in it's entertainment value. :) Just wanted to let you know.

edit: I realize that the very first reply in this thread is also from AlenL. Derp.
Anyways: It's really cool that you care so much about your game that you keep an eye on the forum, and participate with your players. Keep it up!
