If you have a Mono/Stereo 3mm cable - similar to being used as an AUX for hooking your phone to your car, for example, you can try using the Mic/Headphone jack of your computer and using PPM signal (will need SmartPropoPlus and vJoy software).
Sorry for the news; let me know if you need help.
The Phoenix RC cable has a black box added to it, which specifically encrypts the signal so that nothing but Phoenix RC can interpet it. You would have to buy another USB eligible cable, or use a Mono audio cable using the 3.5mm input/audio jack of your computer and SmartPropoPlus software.

There is also a great guide in the discussions, Tuto]Using a Spektrum transmitter without USB dongle
I created a short guide that may also help.
awh0423 beat me to it :)
I've never personally used or owned a Mac, but there is a software a friend of mine used called ControllerMate - I believe- and that worked for him. Cannot recall if it employed the 3.5 mm PPM signal or not. What kind of Transmitter are you using?
Which creates a driver on MAC OS that enable the DX6i to be seen as a joystick.
Impressive! Glad you got it to work - I'm awful at finding useful things to do with my Arduino boards.
