Many core i7 models are very much capable of running Liftoff well. The 2.3GHz usually means base-clock and will go much higher to accommodate the load being put on it, unless we're talking about a low-power model.
There are older versions of Liftoff available through Steam (through the 'betas' functionality) that we offer to people who experience issues with the latest version(s), but these usually don't necessarily perform better. These are usually there because for some users, these work as opposed to a newer version comes with updated engine/plugins/etc. that might conflict with hardware or other software they have installed.

also is the betas option something that I can switch to once I download Liftoff?
Ok, this macbook is pretty old and will not run Liftoff properly. I don't think the CPU will be the problem, but the graphics card will be.
It may run, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. It will also run just the very first few environments that were present on release. But almost everything else we released in the last few years of environments will certainly not.
