DynaMarisa 3D wears its EDF inspiration on its sleeves (you get fairies with you shouting P-D-F! P-D-F!). It only has single player, but it has an interesting mechanic to its weapon collection where some weapons will be variants that are either worse or better than the baseline weapon in terms of damage, blast radius, reload times et cetera.
In Helldivers you fight alien robots and giant insects. You can call in mechs and airstrikes and wield overpowered weaponry. The core game is a fair bit different in that it's a top-down shooter, but I feel they're very close in spirit.
Lost Planet 1 is also an option, though it doesn't have a co-op mode and takes itself a bit too seriously, not being as over the top or light hearted as the sequel.
Also from the doujin scene, there's Homura Combat, which is also a blatant EDF clone.

The weapons in those Can get pretty silly (due to the excessively huge number of characters and people complaining when they shared movesets/weapons instead)
*how and in what way varies. From memory, in some cases it's just "no online multiplayer" because it was designed for a dedicated server (somehow) and the money way never put into setting one up for PC, while in others there are actually gamebreaking bugs. Which is really, really sad, because the console versions are great fun.
GFWL isn't optimal for co-op or anything for that matter but it works, hopefully Capcom will port it to Steamworks since there's a 300+ post over on that forum about petitioning for a Steamworks port.
