You can destroy each one of the panels that comes off to there is a lot to shot in this game.
Plus I'm fairly certain in earlier missions it's got some extra plot health, much like the first time flying saucers dropping bugs did.
For example, I got a sniper rifle that can one shot the Mothership laser plates, but in missions earlier than the one named "Starship, it sure as hell took more effort to hurt destroy even those with said gun.
I have a rocket launcher that can two shot Flying saucers when they open, but pumping 6+ shots into Flying saucers before the mission you needed to start killing them didn't destroy them before they flew away.
33 I gave it a shot at busting the Genocide gun with my current weaponry (A selection of Hard More weapons while I played it on Normal). But after 2 solid minutes of firing rockets at the G Gun without it breaking, I took the hint.
