Later flamethrowers are actually useful.
SDL1 is okay, but SDL1 Bike is absolutely a joke vehicle.
No it's a joke weapon.
There is also a can of bug spray with a tactical scope strapped to it, and handfulls of firecrackers.
The torch and bug spray eventually lead into the flamethrowers and acid supersoakers.
The handfulls of firecrackers... Become handfulls of firecrackers capable of leveling buildings. They are surprisingly great.
My Wing Diver friend decided to try this weapon anyway, based on the respectable 8 x scattershot damage and energy consumption it had on the stats screen.
Much to our dismay, we found that the gun actually fires 8 lazers in a lateral starburst pattern AROUND the Wing Diver, and he promptly shredded every soldier around him, including me.
My second favourite aspect is that it would've been a really effective gun had it not been for the 180% energy consumption.
I know this is so because that's exactly how I used the hoverbikes in earlier games. And now it's got room for two people!
I would start using the bike if it could be called in instantly instead of having to wait for the regular helicopter drop.
Its due to the way that the game's physics engine works. Despite the fact that its janky as all hell, the vehicle physics were coded to be "realistic" in how they were intended to function.
The reason the bike pulls to one side when moving forward is because the bike's forward thrust is coming from the single rear drive-wheel, but the game's janky physics combined with the fact that its got a side-car makes the entire vehicle horrifically unbalanced and barely controllable while the rear-wheel tries to push the bike forward.
However, if you put the bike into reverse, the fact that rear wheel is now "pulling" the bike as oppossed to "pushing" it makes it much easier to control.
Imagine yourself trying to move an unbalanced heavy cart with only one hand. If you were to try to push the cart forward, the weight imbalance would cause the front of the cart to frequently swing out to the side whilst you struggled to maintain forward movement. However, if you were to get infront of the cart and pull it instead, the weight of the cart will help ensure that it remains mostly straight out behind you.
Its actually a real-world problem in vehicle design, keeping the front-wheels of a rear-wheel drive vehicle from losing traction and swinging out to the side, albeit exagerated to a hilarious degree. The only ground vehicles in the game that were not coded in this "realistic" manner are the Mechs.
