Start with EDF 5 and maybe buy 4.1 too in sale.
EDF 4.1 essentially takes place in a different story universe than EDF 5.
No, EDF 5 is a reboot.
Yes it is. But what does it change in the best order to play? Its like watching the third part of a movie and after this the remake of part one. It doesn`t make any sense.
But to answer OP. What do you want better looks and smoother gameplay or More skill based good jank worse looks? (please note both games have both just in more or less %'s.)
If you want a slightly easier game play EDF 5 and if you want more strategy EDF 4.1.
But seriously just buy both k thanks bye.
That said choose EDF5 over this. There's little reason to play EDF4.1 now that EDF5 is out. EDF5 is just that much better mechanically. It becomes hard to go back to EDF4.1 after playing EDF5.
As for the reboot thing, the point of a reboot is there's no need to watch it in order with the previous entries. EDF5 is not the prequel to EDF4 story-wise they have nothing to do with each other. The aliens aren't even called Ravagers in EDF5.
EDF 5 is something new entirely from what I remembered. I dont think it can lead to EDF 4.1 in 10 years when the surviving population of humanity is less than 50 in the story. We would hear words of clones being thrown about if thats the case in 4.1 and all civilian here would instead be EDF soldier and not running around screaming since all the pacifist and non-military individual are killed thinking they are safe from orbital bombardment in a bunker.
2 of these game in terms of game play is pretty good, although if sprinting is in the habit and better allied infantry AI is in need, EDF 5 is way to go, less punishing too since you still get armor and weapon even when you loose.
