EDF5 improved a lot of things and added a lot of new stuff, while keeping and improving the existing content.
The biggest improvement, besides graphics and performance, is in my opinion how the Fencer handles.
It's just so much better than in EDF 4.1 and the weapons are also quite impressive.
The mech missions are also "better" and more expansive than in EDF 4.1.
If you like EDF 4.1, then you will also like EDF 5.
It's hard to say which one is better, because both have their own specialties that they are good at.
It probably depends on personal taste, but I can't decide which one is better, because I love them both.
BUT! For me, the biggest subjective drawback of EDF 5 is the design of the WingDivers.
I always main WingDiver and the design in EDF 4.1 was really great, but they messed up in EDF5.
I still enjoy playing as one, but every time I look at my WingDiver... it just makes me feel like a slutty Sailorfuku clown hybrid.
Where's the cool sci-fi military design!?
I look like some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cosplay with this stupid outfit!
sry for the rant...
Back to topic: If you still have content left to do in EDF4.1, then wait till EDF5 drops to 20 €/$.

You just have to search for your currency and country.
Now, I'm still playing through EDF 4.1, so I'm not going to get 5 for a while.
I don't think that many people are abandoning 4.1 to play 5.
They are different enough to be enjoyed at the same time.
It's not like the yearly FIFA games that only update their predecessor.
EDF 5 did some new things that make it stand out in comparison to EDF 4.1.
For example, the Fencer plays very differently in EDF 5, IMO.
The missions and the story is also different.
They just have a different "feel" and differ in smaller and greater ways.
Sometimes I prefer EDF 4.1 and another time I prefer EDF 5.
They made Fencers more playable, did mess up the Air Raider by giving vehicles to Ranger so its more like 2017 Ranger than 4.1. Wing Diver looks bad design wise though I prefer 4.1 where they look BA while 5 made them look like an 80s Japanese low budget science fiction movie or even a Power Ranger if you will basically.
I hate how they did carry over animations, emotes, and monsters from 4.1 though I was hoping for a new giant monster entirely as they did away with 2017's version in 4.1 (I still miss the cyborg version of that red monster).
To me EDF5 is better but 4.1 is still good too and is a continuation of 2017 as Storm Team has the OG Soldier from that game (you) coming back to finish the fight Master Chief style. 4.1 is great for those who came from 2017 on Xbox 360 while 5 is good for newcomers to find the series more engaging and easier to get into.
I don`t like the new enemy types in 5. But its a great game too.
5 :controls feel more fluent, added sprint feature so no need to use roll spamming, more diverse hostiles
