It happen sometimes, more often than in other games, but it's not a big problem.
It's really simple, you have a list with open matches, then you join and do a mission togetherwith other players. You can also create your own room and have others join you.
I understand veteran can get tired explaining stuff to newbies, especially if it's already the hundred time.
There's not really a reason, it's more that people are to stupid to make rooms private. This is such a big problem that there is even a guide on how to make your session private.

Will try multiplayer after going through single player first (things at tough at later stages).
That's in my opinion the best way to experience EDF, I played it first in singleplayer on normal, so that I get used to different classes, weapons and enemies. Then I played it in splitscreen with a friend on hard.
I hardly played mulitplayer, but the few times I did it was pretty good. From 20 online mission I was just kicked about 2 times when I entered a lobby and the people were friendly and cooperative.
