How to drive a car perfectly
All u need is a pc drivewheel, for example logitec.
Put the settings for the car on the buttons of the drivewheel.
Use the keybord settings for walking by feet.
I used this way also at the GTA series ...
And what should I say: It works, NO SHxT :-) ...
Ah, 1 thing, if u want to use the riflescope, u have to change the setting for it every time u start the game again. (After shut down the game the setting is gone again, pfff)

I'm just going to stick with WSAD.

I use the numberpad a lot at work because I am typing numbers all day, so I mapped all the driving controls to that and I'm even impressing myself with how well I can drive a car using a keyboard now LOL.

yup, of course u can drive the cars by your choise of keyboard settings ...
BUT by using a drivewheel u will "feel" the road ...
A totally other way for that game ...
Try it out, it's much MORE fun ...
Even the racing battles :-) ...

Yes, it has pretty good force feedback for being so old

Just like the rest of the game, where you shoot etc .. Tap tap tap.

Is it just me, or do cars veer slightly to the left over time? I thought it was because of damage, but I got a new car and it did the exact same thing.

It sounds like a drifting analog stick, but if you're driving with the keyboard that is odd.

I'm using a keyboard. I thought it was related to crash damage, but any kind of damage would trigger it. Even being shot on the windshield. It happens more often when the car is damaged, but it also happens with new cars, albeit rarely.

Back then my computer was just powerful enough to run the game.

My mum gave me a steering wheel from Tesco that was good for both PS and PC and had a separate gear lever and handbrake. It was basically the beginning of my 'gamer' era.

The quality of that steering wheel was very poor, but at the time I didn't notice or really care. I broke the pedals on the treadle because I accidentally pushed down on the edge too hard... I glued it with superglue and it did its job flawlessly from then on. The game recognized the steering wheel, pedals and gearshift.

I could drive the cars smoothly.

If I turned the steering wheel a little bit the game would turn the wheels of the cars a little bit. If I gave it a little throttle or kept the speed up this also happened in the game. The brakes were also nice and smooth to dose evenly.

It was such a good experience that for years I was able to play Mafia by making up the missions in my own mind and imagination...
