Running as admin didn't fix it, just didn't get any error message displayed.
I ended up using a fixed Mafia executable. Search on MegaGames.
I patched the game to the latest version (the patch on the disc says v1.3 - think its the same as a 1.2 patch though) and tested the two v1.2 Eng fixes.
The Deviance backup CD fix bypasses SafeDisc but not the disc check.
The Drunk fix bypasses both SafeDisc and the disc check.
(Wouldn't be surprised if the Drunk fixed exe was used for the Steam release...)
Run Setup.exe and config the game, then swap in and run the fixed file.
If you don't already have the Windows feature DirectPlay installed, you should get a prompt saying the game requires it. Choose "Install this feature".
If you don't get that prompt but just an Init error error:#4214 Unsupported..., go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > Legacy Components > check DirectPlay > OK
After DirectPlay installation, Deviance fix will ask for Disc 1, Drunk will go straight into the game.
(If mouse is stuck Alt+Tab out/in).
on windows 7/8/8.1 is only disabled by default
only steam & gog versions will works
Thats weird. I didn't want to play steam version do to the lack on music (Could not restored no matter what) so i launch my cd version just last week on windows 10 and it work no problem.
Your CD-ROM copy probably has a damaged disc which corrupted the install and thus the game cannot start. The only way is to get a new CD-ROM set, but only the Mafia/Max Payne 1 bundle is widely availble while the standalone disc set is getting more rare
Used to see a lot of that as well with some CD/DVD-RW drives too, requiring firmware to patch them otherwise the protection would fail.
Generally true, though as an example. At work we have a machine that's used for CNC, and it absolutely won't work with the disc with a new drive made in the last 4 years. Luckily I had an old one sitting around and we were back up and running in no time. And of course, because the machine works well nobody wants to drop the $500k on a new machine either just because of cranky hardware.
Sadly it's probably going to come to a point where we'll need to emulate the drive. Though that's not as bad as some of the stuff that controls our HVAC and has been running since the mid-1980s. That's all kinds of special. At this point I think if the power failed, the HDD's wouldn't even spin up so they've been looking at using a PLC+PI solution as a replacement for it finally does die. The last time the power went out here, they added layered UPS systems for it. That was in the northeast blackout.
