Yep. Picked up a pistol, switched ever since. Meh, I can live with it.
I didn't run into this problem on my first playthrough, but it happened during the Peach Wilkins fight on my second. I assumed it was an issue of the inventory caused by new game+ at first, until I saw that people were having it happen on their first playthrough. We talked, and we realized that yes, picking up a pistol during the fight somehow messes with the inventory--we both did it, and I was far too wrench happy in my first playthrough (not realizing that I would actually get all my ammo back) to actually be concerned with picking up the pistol.
It doesn't bother me too much. I got used to the switch fairly quickly, honestly. For me, it's the acceleration issue and the occasional crashes (had four, three at the first hack in the medical pavillion first playthrough) that annoy me the most.
Actually using the wrench can be be done just fine if you supplement it with the proper tonics. I went through most of the game using just the wrench with SportsBoost 2, Wrench Lurker and Bloodlust. Very effective for mowing through anything that isn't a Nitro Splicer or Big Daddy.
Pistol is the only weapon I couldn't really use starting around Hephaestus.
That's fine, so how hard is it to press 2 instead of 1?
Pistol with anti-personnel rounds still work fine throughtout the game if you go for headshots. If you use natural camouflage like I do, you can kill splicers with it before they can even react. Admittedly, a single steel tipped bolt will do an even better job and you might actually get your ammo back but since you're always full of every ammo type in this game even on survivor, it's nice to mix it up every once in a while. It also doesn't have travel time so if the shot is tricky, pistol might be a better option than crossbow.
The wrench is the best weapon in the game by far (past something like the first two levels). Even killed an elite rosie on survivor with it (admittedly, there was a turret on my side as well)
Not to mention the damage bonuses you can get for the Wrench from researching Big Daddies, as well as the Damage Research tonics.
Quick question though--do tonics stack? If they do, adding a couple Damage Research tonics into the mix would make an insanely effective wrench whacker build.
