How to improve blacksmithing skill
I may be missing something but what do I have to craft to improve my blacksmithing skill at different levels. It seems like some items don't improve your skills.
Many thanks for responses!

To upgrade BlackSmithing.
MetalWorker - Smithy... This requires you to harvest Iron ( digger - Mine Worker perk required ) and then you need to CRAFT Iron or Steel BLANKS (which require Ingots) on the Anvil in the Smithies Work Shop.
I did write a walk-through for ver 0.8715 the other week.

Most skills can be learned simply by doing a task, which means you can add an unknown skill by engaging with your environment. Blacksmithing is the only skill that I can recall that requires you to have the skill before you can gain experience in it. You have to be able to make the blanks to level up the skill, and you can't make blanks if you don't already have the skill. Catch 22. That means that if you don't start with it, you must find a trainer to teach it to you before you can advance. After that, you just need to get the ore, make ingots, and turn them into blanks. Since most of the armor and weapons that you will want to make are steel, I usually only produce steel blanks. Also, it has been a while so I can't really remember, but if I recall correctly the blanks are only used for weapons, not armor. You should have swords enough for everyone in all of your towns and armies by the time you are done.

When making swords, I prefer to keep them one-handed for the attack speed, but try to give them max damage for a one-handed sword. I end up with something like a bastard or long sword for everyone, which is much faster than a 2-handed sword and so has better DPS than the max damage 2-hander. Knights Armor for everyone, but if someone shows up with their own set of plate, or if I get some off of bandits, I will gladly put it on some of the troops (captains, or city guards usually).

Side Note: If you equip your troops in knights armor and they successfully campaign, at some point I think they actually turn into nobles.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the composition of your military camp will give bonuses to different aspects of your army. You usually only want 2 Trebuchets with max troops manning them, because the other slots can be used to buff all of your troops for combat, giving a small, well-equipped army the ability to win over a much larger one. This isn't so important until you go up against a really large force. More trebuchets means a faster siege, if you are going up against a smaller force. Don't build more trebuchets than you have troops to man them. You can put 3 on a Treb instead of 4, and it might go a little faster with an extra Trebuchet, but generally you want them as full as possible, otherwise they are very slow. For example, if you have 9 troops, you can put 3 each on 3 Trebuchets and probably go faster than having 2 trebuchets with 4 on each.
