For people still struggling with trying to get windowed mode to work, download a program called "dxwnd" - operates the same as d3d but I find it more stable where as d3d tends to flicker a few of my games. Only my experience though. You'll be able to play Stronghold in windowed mode fine.

I would suppose then there is not a way to do this without an additional program.

The "dxwnd" program did the trick! Thanks :)

I know this is really old, but I need some help. When I use dxwnd, edge scrolling does not seem to scale with my resolution. When I move my mouse out of the upper left quadrant of the screen, the screen starts scrolling to the lower right corner of the map. Any ideas how to fix that? I've been fiddling around with the various settings for two hours with no luck. The edge scrolling "window" seems to be fixed to 800x600.

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. I had to switch the emulation mode to "primary buffer," "locked surface," or "none." The other options wouldn't work.

For Googlers:
In my case edge scrolling was fixed by setting:
- "Video > Sreen resolution" Radiobutton: "All", "Custom resolution" checked, and "initial resolution" checked and set to "1920 x 1080"
- "DirectX > Emulation > Renderer" at the default value "primary surface",
- "Main > Position > Window initial position & size" set to "... W 1920 H 1080"

Jean MVP 💯

It's amazing to see people help with DXWND which is an MVP program in itself!
