How do cheats work in this game?

I go on a bunch of websites and they all say to press the Shift, Alt, and A keys?
When I do on the main menu, nothing happens and when I was in game I would try doing ALT+Y to kill all onscreen enemies but nothing happens.
Am I doing something wrong?

after you've done the shift+alt+a thing (just keep ramming diffrent combos at the main menu) you have to etc spam the cheat buttons like alt+x just hold alt and spam the x button and it slowely adds the 1k.

oh and yhea i know its a kinda old thread, just tought it would be helpfull.

I never cheated
Stronghold 1 is (as Crusader) perfectly playable without cheating
which cannot be said of crusader 2 (which spoilt most of the
fun for me. But if you played without cheating and
yust want to get back to a certain mission save you've lost
that does make sense! : )

For those who get stuck at mission 15, here is a modified map where all you have to do is to kill 2 men's from pig's army.
