Crusader's gameplay is more action/"arcade" oriented as it has skirmish maps and several campaign trails, whereas SH1 is more story-based, with a single (but extensive) main campaign. Now, SHC is definitely more popular than SH1 primarily because of AI skirmish, a feature which SH1 lacks - even today, you'll see that there are far more lobbies on Gameranger for SHC. So, for multiplayer, you're better off with SHC. Even if you don't play online though, there's simply more content than in SH1. However, if you end up liking SHC, you should really pick up the original because there are some themes/features which might make better sense, or otherwise be more enjoyable, if you've played SH1. That said, the learning curve for SHC isn't too deep.
