Timber and Stone

lets talk herding
i feel the herding is kinda bad in this game for the fact that we have to kill chickens for their feathers, why cant my herder pluck the chicken once in awhile for its feathers ?? and i would love to be able to breed my animals as well i dunno why this is not a thing ?

also i want to point out that we have to actually kill sheep for wool ?? in real life all you do is shear them so why do we kill them for it shouldnt the herder be shearing them ?

dont need to kill them, they produce feathers on a cycle but it is slow and i think you need shears, the cycles are different for each animal from 1 hour to 3 i think and amount is dependant on your herding level.. but i agree this is one of many mechanics that needs some fine tuning.
^^ dont kill your chickens they do indeed produce feathers over time.

didnt even know this ... it seems like they do nothing what about sheep and the pigs ?

Sheep you can get wool from. Pigs.. I'm really not sure.

Oh, also with chickens you get food over time too, but you need a pretty decent herder to get much out of them. They also need tools, I think a knife to get feathers and sheers to get wool, not positive on that, though.

I have one of my foragers as a part-time herder. Only gotten him to level 7 in it but he does pretty decent now.

And I think it takes a few days after you domesticate the animals before they start producing anything. At least it always seems to for me.
You get about every 8mins food from chickens.
Something around 2:46h for feathers.
And i guess it was over 5 hours for wool.

You dont need any tools (except the crook to domesticate them) for gathering feathers and food from chickens - but you do need shears for boars and sheeps (you get fur from boars).
The knife is only for slaughtering as far as i know.

They actually dont need a few days to provide the items, on a new game i domesticated a boar and it instantly gave me fur.
they will actually use the knife to cut the hair off pigs and to get wool from sheep BUT at a much lower ammount

I'm getting like 1 with knifes 2 with sheers (mind you that means if you get 15 with a knife you would have gotten 30 with a sheers)

normally I keep around 5 boars 5 sheep and as many chickens as I can stuff in the pen

however I noticed you need to add allot of misc storage before a harvest or they tend to disappear
it takes such a long time to repsawn fur and wool on sheep and boars. that i would rather just hunt them and let them respawn. that way you will also get leather.

only thing i would herde is chickens.

remember the out put of stuff you get from harvesting actions, depends on the skill level and quality of the tool.
in the beginning you might not get anything at all.
in another post i posted about more information i said why is there no info on tools this is why we need the info put on to tell us what the tool is used for and how it works ....
The "harvest" time for wool, feathers etc. 5 hours for wool?! that's insanely long, and if you herder is low level, you won't even get that much anyway...
The time is halfed if speeded up by the way.

And yeah, actually herding for wool and fur is pretty useless.

Better hunt at first and buy wool later, its pretty cheap.

so what im hearing is the herding is stupidly unbalanced atm .... no wonder why i cant get past day 11 or something ...
Well, it should be possible to do everything without herding.

You actually dont need that much woll at first, maybe for a better bed, (later for some clothes) so hunting a few sheeps is enough - you also dont need that much fur/twine, the only problem are the feathers.

Its best in my eyes to simply buy them - with the coins at the start you can buy 40-50 which would be around 200 arrows, that should help survive some more days until you might have sold something for more coins + feathers.
Does herding actually work? ... I've read conflicting posts - Some saying animals don't breed and you get no resources for penned up animals .. now this one saying animals do produce resources ... could someone please clarify for me, as I've only tried a herder once and a goblin wandered straight into camp and killed all my chickens :D .... thanks
They do produce ressources - but only food really "fast" (compared to wool, fur, feathers).

And your herder needs a higher level (as the farmers do) to produce at least something, a low level herder gets nearly nothing.

And no, they dont breed.
That's good to know ... I'm running pretty low on feathers in my current game even though I picked an area with 90 for chickens .. so I'll go herd some up .. cheers ;)
