I can't give a good answer about Unity games. I was most recently playing Nights of Azure with this gamepad, and it worked. The windows USB Game Controllers callibration thing works, and even browser based games seem to recognize it.
I'd be curious which gamepads other people are using so I know which ones are compatible.
However, the support rep told me "For VR, I believe it is just the Xbox controller." and otherwise implied that no other game controllers are compatible, noting that my Steelseries Stratus XL is specifically not comaptible.
Anyone have experience with other gamepads working? or does everyone here own an Xbox One controller? Given ubisoft support has pushed me past the refund deadline I guess time to shell out another $60(?) for an Xbox One gamepad...

You can use x360ce.exe program to emulate any gamepad or joystick as x360:
http://www.x360ce.com/
Choose the right platform x86 or x64 the same as your game .exe file (Eagle Flight is x64), calibrate your device, add game .exe path in Games tab, set COM checkbox, apply, save. It's create xinput.dll files for this game.
