For erika, it's like Battler; Battler became a sorcerer because he understood the whole story and was recognized by Lambdadelta. For virgillia i wonder since she is only a witch "In Umineko" ; unlike Bern and Lamb who seem to freely wander.
As for the cause to become a witch/sorcerer, i think it is actively linked to the "real world" ; my theory is that to become a witch, one has to write a story/a poem (not sure) and gain acknowledgement for it (ex: Kinzo for the epitaph and Featherine for all of her works).
I think it's interesting to note that Battler became a sorcerer AFTER he changed his thinking process and his vision of magic (ep 5), that as a sorcerer he is a lot colder/harsher to the rest of the world; and that Battler became a co-author AFTER becoming Tohya (thus losing his memories and changing of personality). In both cases, there was a big changement in his life.
Erika is a real mystery for me : did she have the occasion to become a writer and she decided not to ? Did she want to but couldn't ? I honestly have no idea.
And Virgilia ... we know waaay to little things about her. Even her human avatar is more mysterious than it seems.
So yeah. I think it's time to put the 'mystery' aside and to start analysing the link between 'fantasy' and 'reality' in umineko, because it seems that there is a lot of interesting things in there that everyone ignores.
Anyone who wants to think with me is welcome here, in my tea party for the humans who research the 'fantasy'.
