Are you guys exaggerating?
Everytime I see someone recommend Umineko they always talk about it like it's literally the greatest story ever told. I have to know for sure before I play this, are you guys exaggerating or not? Because if I go into this with my expectations set for a life changing piece of fiction and I end up getting a pretty good visual novel I'm going to be really disappointed, and it'll be your fault for hyping it up too much.

I would say it's extremely up to each person. I wouldn't personally call it life-changing, nor the greatest story ever told, but between all it's great and... less so good parts, I would still call it one of my absolute favourite stories I've read. But it depends on what you are looking for in the story. For example: I personally really liked the mystery, so some of the later episodes/part of the story felt like a bit of a drag for me because the story shifts its focus for a while. I would say it's important to be invested in the characters (and be able to understand that people aren't 2 dimensionally either only good or only evil, but complicated and flawed human beings) for you to enjoy the story. If you have trouble liking a character for some reason, you might find parts less enjoyable. I mean I personally find more or less half of EP4 to be pretty boring because I was "meh" about the character that gets a lot of focus in that episode, but I have seen most people really related to and adore that character. So again, each to their own. Also advice; DON'T FORGET the time-period the story takes place in: 1986.

Tl;dr: Never go into ANY story expecting it to be life-changing or the greatest story ever told. Go in to it with an open mind and quite a bit of patience to make your own opinion on it for what it is: A story. It's a story that many likes, yes, but it is neither flawless nor is it for everyone... even if I personally consider it, as a whole, one of my favourite stories to have read. "Warts and all" so to speak.

While Umineko did have a massive impact on me, and I would consider the experience “life changing” in some sense, I don’t think you should go into it with some grand expectations of it literally being the greatest work of literature ever and that it will objectively change your life and your worldview.

When people say a piece of media changed their life (if they’re not just being hyperbolic) it’s usually in a way very personal or significant to them alone, and that kind of experience will probably not be universal to everyone.

Basically, don’t ever go into anything with the expectation that it’s going to be life changing, especially not if you’re the type of person who gets let down when very high expectations are not met and has that ruin your experience with otherwise good media.

Making your own judgement is part of experience. If people around the world that have hundreds of VN's read tell you it's good and worth knowing then perhaps it is. It's a very long game though.

Don't go into anything with that kind of expectation. And Umineko just isn't going to click with some people even if they "get it".

It is, however, a safe bet to say that it's pretty unlike anything else.
I am not exaggerating, no, but always remember that everyone's experience is different. Don't let other people's opinions influence yours. If you think the hype will end up making the actual story disappointing, then don't buy into the hype, play it on your own, and come to your own conclusion.
It's pretty good. I guess it's not a "safe" story to get into cuz It's a very long story you're getting into in hopes you'll love it. (Unlike a safe story that most people enjoy cuz it's 1-hour or 5-minutes of brainless fun.)

For EP1 of the VN, you could watch the anime to see if you'll like it. Maybe even up to EP2-4 of the anime? (that's episode 9.) But by then, if you're still in for the ride, you should switch to the VN cuz the anime gradually drops in quality to trash from episode 10 onwards. Nobody really recommends the anime but the start is fine.

Absolutely don’t watch the anime even if it’s just for EP1 or 2, lots of important things are set up in the early parts that the anime misses
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

EP1 doesn't have glaring flaws. EP2 does in ep10, missing an entire iconic scene, it's enough that I don't recommend the anime from there onwards tbh.
