If I get this do I really need the mods?
Is it okay to just play the vanilla version of the game? Or do I need mods such as the Umineko Project or 07th mod? Thanks

I played it without mods and it's okay too. Actually, there is many people who prefers the Steam sprites over the PS3 sprites. I think the major point of the mods is the dubbling, but it's not a big deal with you play the game without it. Also, the CGs are not present in the vanilla version, but you can just google them after you finish the game.

I'd recommend you to take a look on some video that shows the new version before your make you decision. The interface is more friendly, since the vanilla's text box covers the whole screen and don't shows who is talking. Mods are not a must, but be aware that you can find the vanilla style kinda strange. I prefer play it without mods because I find this rustic style as some type of signature of Ryukishi07.

You can play it without the mods. The mods just make the experience more enjoyable for most, but it's perfectly good without

If I just play the vanilla version, I still need to download the translation patch right? Also, one last question if I used the Umineko project, then that means I don't need to buy the steam version right?

I don't remember about any translation mistakes and I didn't even know about some translation patch, so I can't answer you about that. Maybe Battler himself could know about it.

About Umineko Project, you have to buy both PC version (I don't know if Steam version counts for it, so please check their website) and PS3 version to play it.

After sitting through over 60 hours of Higurashi and 80 hours (so far) of Umineko, i can say it's fine without voice mods. Ironically i find the VO to limit the experience. I played the former all the way through with Steam sprites because the original art threw me off but in Umineko the original art is very cute and adds to the atmosphere. So far in the vanilla version there's about 3-4 translation mistakes but they're mispronounced words and grammar mistakes which are practically unnoticeable at first glance.
I would really recommend just playing it as it was released for PC.

Okay, thank you. I realized I could not even use the Umineko project anyways since I don't have the PS3 game, but maybe ill try the 07th mod and vanilla just to see which one I prefer. Thanks again.
