Recommend me a novel on par with Umineko
I know this isn't the most suited place, but I'm looking for something that can mark my life as much as this visual novel... Anything goes as long as it isn't about generic mary sues and dumb sex antics with meaningless fast-paced action.

Already went through Higurashi ages before it came on Steam. I was asking for a western novel in the first place.

If you haven't I'd recommend giving chinese novels a try, (strongly recommend ISSTH & ED) I Shall Seal The Heavens, Renegade Immortal, Emperor's Domination, Coiling Dragon, Stellar Transformations.

As for Japanese/Korean novels, Legend of the Moonlight Sculptor, Index Series, Konjiki no Wordmaster.

As for western, The Demonata Series, The Everworld Series, The Witcher Series, Unwind, The Forest of Hands and Teeth Series.

I would recommend The House in Fata Morgana.

Try book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, or really anything by Gene Wolfe. His writing is a bit tricky to get into at first and a lot of people get turned off by the fact that it forgoes pretty much every one of the familiar cliches. Since you like Umineko though you clearly have an appreciation for mystery and puzzles however and each of his works have those in spades along with a healthy heaping of magic and mind games.

I finished reading BOTNS a couple of days ago and I agree the mystery is top notch. However I was disappointed by the lack of character development, plus I got into a fight with the fandom because they kept acting as a bunch of know-it all, demanding that I should drop the series because I've been reading it in the wrong way, looking for character development in a "symbolist" work. In the end I removed Urth of the New Sun from my order. I guess I've been looking the wrong way all along, but I sought something as emotionally demanding as Umineko. I don't generally hold much interest in puzzles.

Like I recommended above I think The House in Fata Morgana would be to your taste.

It offers a gripping story with likable characters in misfortuned circumstances.

At first four individual stories are offered and it seems like that is whole of the visual novel, but that is just a ruse. It is only the first half, the second half goes in a totally different direction and makes you rethink what you read till that point.

Like Umineko the sound track from THiFM is also excellent.

Any mystery novel, the motive is the soul of the whole thing. I dunno how character development can be a bad thing.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad run in with elitists, I fully understand how that kind of behaviour can sour someone to a franchise . Funnily enough Urth is IMO of all the books the one most focused on character development as Severian is forced to actually confront many of his underlying issues.

Other than that I can reccomend The Stress of Her Regard and its sequel Hide Me Among the Graves by Tim Powers. Plenty of character development there though it helps if you like the romantic poets like Byron & Shelly as it focuses heavily on them (while having one of the most unique twists on vampires ever). Another suggestion would be the Broken Empire & Red Queens War series by Mark Lawrence. I have some major problems with Broken Empire but both series are good and Red Queens War more than makes up for the flaws of it's predecessor.

I was looking to read the Broken Empire series as anti stress books but the first book never arrived and I got a refund lol. I've heard people are disgusted by it, but I'm rather Interested to find out how much of a devil Jorg is. Either way I'll probably order the whole series as it's quite cheap.

I'll look into it as soon as the sequel is out. I've grown out of "anime" lately and that includes visual novels, save for my absolute favorites I'd replay any day. Gothic isn't my cup of tea, nevertheless the hype caught my curiosity, Hopefully it's not a 18+ generic shounen fest like Type-Moon titles and the overwhelming hype they get.

Lol yeah, Jorg is a right little ♥♥♥♥ most of the time. It's not really the behaviour that irked me though (I loved the Karsa Orlong sections of Malazan and he is debatably far worse than Jorg ever managed to be - his ultimate goal is basically genocide after all) it's mostly that Jorg's too damn young. The world that he inhabits is a really nasty place, and while he is clearly meant to be something of a prodigy, I just don't see someone of that age getting away with half the crap he pulls off.

The upcoming The House in Fate Morgana visual novel is not a sequel, but rather a prequel.

It is anything but a " 18+ generic shounen fest like Type-Moon titles". It is much more mature in themes and setting in that aspect.

Fate/Stay Night is pretty decent.
Steins;Gate and Xenoblade Chronicles, in my opinion, are even better than Umineko. Highly recommended.
