You better give it up now and play something else. Seriously.
Already did lmao
Though I do enjoy the changes, you should NEVER discount the "purists" as you say opinion as it is VITAL to help maintain the original vision of the game. That being said finding the children in this first level was easily done by me as a child. So lets not insult Iguana entertainment with a faulty criticism. Not only until The Blind One's Lair does the game get truly esoteric, but if you are patient you will figure it out.
Now to answer OP's question I am going just by memory so I can help you out a bit. Assuming you only have one child I can imagine its the child near the start of the game after you get the pistol and obtain a flashlight.
The next child will be obtained shortly after near, you eventually enter a area with roped up items, boats, and eventually a drawbridge with a shotgun. This area has a child as well, later on when you release a switch you go into a water pipe area. You need to make a easy jump and the child is in this area.
From there the children are hidden in areas behind hidden walls and one a hidden wall behind boxes. There is one I recall where you are in a arena with a bunch of houses you can easily jump onto. The child was behond a wall behind some boxes.
Honestly I am surprised you went through the map 7 times and could not find them, my suggestion is to ALWAYS hug walls, be VERY patient and keep backtracking checking EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY! This level is very easy compared to the later levels. Even the 2nd level will put you through loops, actually the 2nd level gives even me a sense of horrifying dread thinking of it. Some insane secrets in there and weapons you can get early if you are intuitive.
It's debatable. Exploration/Puzzle Solving was a big part of the games gameplay loop. To throw markers/waypoints everywhere ruins that. The problem is most people playing this today are likely just looking for a retro shooter experience they can knock out in a day or two. It's not like buying the game for full price in the 90's, and being happy to get a few weeks of playtime out of it.
