As I understand it, the n64 version of the game was substantially darker and you needed it for navigation in some places.

Try setting gamma and brightness to ~20%. That should improve the Flare Gun's functionality.

YES, this was my initial fear when I saw the T2 Remaster trailer video... The lighting did not look right :((

I remember the only time I really used it in the n64 version was the ammo caches in level 3, those dark caves had a few false paths so the flare gun was useful to mark where you've been.

Shoot some flares on the ground near you, when you're stopped on the roadside repairing a flat on your Styracosaurus.

I played on a TV and the game was just as dark as it was on N64.. I used the flare gun several times.

Was it brighter on your computer screen then..?

I don't have a computer screen. My PC is on the living room hooked to the TV at all times.
It's a 4k TV with extremely high contrast levels. I even had to increase the brightness of the TV because it was too dark at first.
But I've seen pre release videos on youtube in which the remaster was very bright.. so I know how it looks like.
But playing on my TV I shot a flare in dark corners many times.. even in the first level as some switches inside houses were impossible to see without a flare... I believe this is how it was intended.

Same as above. High-contrast HDTV. However it seems the emission radius on the gun is significantly decreased anyway. Still not useful.

It wasnt useful on the original version either. You just raised the ingame brightness

On my actual cartridge it was. Seems that playing through other means, the in-game brightness controls don't work and since the flares used the same method, they don't either. No idea on the original PC game. Couldn't get it to run since Win7.

It always seemed useless to me, i mean at worst case it could've dealt some fire damage upon direct impact so it'd be an absolute ditch effort ranged weapon.

I distinctly remember the flare working on the explosive barrels, because in the rare case you have no arrows or other ammo, you really dont want to melee an explosive barrel in this game since it shoots out multiple bits of shrapnel that hurt you.
