Longest first level in a game, EVER?
Jesus, it just keeps going... and going... and going... and going. Very confusingly designed, too.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that even comes close to the length and complexity as far as first-levels go. The pacing is practically nonexistent.

Anyone else caught off guard by this? It had been so long since I'd last played Turok 2 (at least a decade... WAY back on N64), I think I'd totally forgotten just how ridiculously demanding this game is compared to most other shooters.

Refunded after being teleported to the start? That's kind of hasty. It does that so you can retrace your steps and complete remaining objectives. It doesn't reset everything, just teleports you back, and it doesn't take long to get back to where you were, less so than before too thanks to quick teleport at the checkpoints.

Yeah, talking about you, OP.

You have no idea what you're talking about (or more specifically, who you're talking to). You really don't.

I have nothing against complex/difficult games, but there must be some sort of difficulty curve. You don't just throw the player into an hour-long, massive, lengthy, confusing level from the get-go. That's bad game design, and abysmal pacing. The original Turok handled it much better.

It's actually great game design, forces you to THINK, you know, use that thing in your head called a brain.
Games that hold your hand, in any way, shape for form, are trash.

Super pissed dude added some hand holding to this once Masterpiece.

What you just described there, is today's typcial Call of Doody player mentality.
Horrible mentality to have.

No, it's terrible design. It would be the equivalent of DOOM or Quake immediately throwing you into a massive level with keycards and teleports galore. Those games don't do that because you're supposed to ease the player in, teaching him the basics and ramping up the difficulty of the enemies and complexity of the levels over a reasonable amount of time. The original Turok is an example of doing it the right way, too. You blast your way through a relatively simple level, learning the basics of the game, and then you reach the hub area and begin entering more and more complex levels. Turok 2 has no balance. It immediately tosses you off the deep end into a ridiculously long (and confusingly designed) level, and that's just bad game design no matter which way you cut it.

I turned those off immediately because they were obnoxious and were never present in the original versions of the game. The way I see it, if you need those indicators to keep the game from being a pain to play, then it's poorly designed. I don't have time for that. I'll just go back to the many oldschool shooters that do it better.

LOL you end up lost and repeat around...I was unfinished in the way back because I'm so LOST.

Since today I return to this game, I attempt to get all 100%. Careful remember the place and keep watch on the map.

It true one of longest in the first level...

Got any response for what I written earlier?

Didn't Turok 1's first level have the most keys if I remember?

the game even has exclamation marks leading to important objectives/objects, just play slower and try to explore each new room, look behind crates and barrels, that kind of stuff.

Or not, since you refunded it.

I never did finish the first level back in the N64 days. The terrible controls combined with negative 5 fps made it frustratingly hard.

Now that its playable I overcame that and finished 3 levels so far.

Feels good.

This game forces you to explore. Yes, the first level is brutally long, but it's a breeze now compared to the N64 days where it didn't hold your hand and there was fog everywhere to start with. The River of Souls is even longer. There were no games like Turok at the time and that's the reason I like it. No hand holding with a mini map to show you where to go next.

Longest first level is either Knights of the old republic 1 or Mass effect 1. They just never stop dragging on. Thanks bioware!

The first level is long for sure, but it gets even better from there.

When I was a kid playing the PC version, I had to use a walkthrough, especially for the final level.

I kid you not, it took me 3 hours (!) back then just to finish the last level without getting lost on the walkthrough. Curious to see if I stand any chance without one now, over 10 years later.

Levels after the first one I can sort of understand your complaints (and don't misunderstand, you're allowed to have complaints about the game period), however it really does sound like this is just not the game for you if you can't stand still for 3 seconds and take a look around.

I've only played the first level so far (I'm replaying the first Turok remaster for the hell of it first) and I can tell you for certain after playing Turok 2 on N64 for years, this has been the easiest the game has ever been.

First of all, aren't there ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ objective markers now? How can you not even follow those?

Second, the areas of the first level aren't even that big. Seriously. Stop for a few seconds, look around for a corner you haven't been to (there's a very handy map you can use) and walk in that direction. If you were actually trying, I guarantee you that you would have found the last child. They even increased the draw distance and pretty much most of the level at any given time if within your eyesight.

However, if you can't even manage that for the first level, then yes, you should certainly refund the game and don't come back.

I just finished the first level, first time ever playing this game and it was a breeze. Not confusing in the slightest and it was pretty fun
