Nostalgia:

In my opinion, i hate to admit it, but the controllers buttons wore out ALOT because of this design, but complaining about the controller is like complaining about TVs not having color when they first came out, yknow?
I saw a guy play overwatch with a modded microwave as a controller
everythings possible
good luck navigating that mess, especially with the fog the n64 version had
amazing game, but the level design really was a product of its era
The N64 didn't have a bad controller, it was just badly implemented by so many games. The analog stick is one of the best I've ever used as far as precision. Nintendo just made a bad choice by wrapping the base of the plastic stick with a metal ring; which tended to shear off plastic and clog the stick. Making them slow after a year or two.
Honestly, it's one of the best controllers I've ever used, aside from the Gamecube's. Both of which had fantastic d-pads as well. The only other d-pads I've ever used are from the SNES, and the Playstation before they switched to the Dual Analog, their d-pads went far downhill after that. The Xbox has never had a serviceable d-pad; it's always sucked.
It worked extremely well with GoldenEye as well, using the up and down c-pad buttons to look up and down, the R button would bring up an aiming sight allowing you to manually aim, with the analog stick used for moving back and forth and turning; the left and right c-pad buttons were for strafing. A would change your weapon forward, B was used to interact. Pressing A and B at the same time would change your weapon backwards, or detonate a Remote Mine after throwing it while it was still in the air. The people I played multiplayer hated me for knowing that.
It could also be used to dual wield weapons of different types; assuming you already had dual weapons next to each other in the roster. Which was difficult unless you had already unlocked the "All Guns" cheat. Which was hard. You had to complete the Egyptian secret level on 00 Agent in under 6 minutes. But then you could dual wield an RCP 90 and an AR-33, or a D5K and a ZMG by messing around with the A/B backwards forwards; which was just kind of neat.
GoldenEye also had auto-aim, which became less effective as you increased the difficulty. On Agent mode, it was extremely effective, automatically aiming at the chest of any target in front of you. On 00, you had to manually adjust aim unless you were a foot away from your target; at which point you were probably dead. It also had the option to switch to a control scheme very similar to Turok's, where the C-buttons were used for moving, and the analog stick was used for aiming, but I never found it as useful as the default controls due to the lack of platforming and the existence of auto-aim.
But yeah, it was actually a pretty damn good controller, even if it was goofy looking.
ambidextrous design so that left handed mutants can play as well
I've known four left handed people that have used the N64 controller, and they all used it the same as a right handed person. Left hand on the middle stick for use of the joystick, right hand on the right side for the c-buttons and A and B keys.
And I haven't played N64 games with many people; maybe ten. So 100% of the people I've played N64 games with that are left handed use the controller the same way that 100% of the people I've played N64 games with.
