Turok
N64 Cover Art Turok
Ok, So I've always wondered this. The N64 Turok's cover art had Joshua Firseed killing the dinosaur. Even the life counter uses his sprite. Then Turok 2 used the male protagonist from Turok 3 for the life counter sprite. Da fuq was up with that? Its always nagged at me.

I read somewhere that it was chosen in order to associate the product with the then-current Turok comic storyline for brand recognition purposes.

That would make sense. I never knew it had comic's as a kid. I wish I could read them now.

Acclaim made an incorrect assumption that Joshua Fireseed was going to be the main character, not Tal'Set Fireseed. They even attempted to retcon it into Tal'Set being a villain and Joshua being the actual Turok around the release of Rage Wars, though Evolution (the Prequel to this game) makes Tal'Set being the Turok canon. Joshua Fireseed is the Turok for the second and third games (Seeds of Evil and Shadow of Oblivion).

actually, Joshua dies at the very beginning of Turok 3 if I'm not mistaken. You play as his grandkids or something.

Edit: Just researched it. Joshua is presumed dead after killing a few bad guys in the first cutscene of the beginning of the game and you play as his siblings.

...yeah, you're right. Joseph, Joshua's younger brother, and Danielle, his older sister are the two playable characters for Shadow of Oblivion (and one of them becomes the Turok following Joshua's demise)

I guess your explanation would explain why Tal-Set was so different in Rage wars though. I never understood that either, but it didn't bother me nowhere nere as much. Joshua was my favorite turok though which would probably be why.

Well the basic plot for rage wars in the game manual is that its some sort of tournament where the winner gets the light burden, which in the turok2 comics is shown to be a bottomless bag which you can pull anything you can think of. Also has the power to destroy Oblivion.

I suspect that Acclaim trying to retcon Tal'Set as a villain was more miscommunication between their various branches than a deliberate storyline direction. Acclaim's marketing team also had a reputation of being extremely arrogant and unwilling to admit fault. They had bet much on the comic line taking off and it bombed hard, so that might have had something to do with it too.

"Canon", as far as Acclaim's series goes, is something best not taken seriously. It's not like Acclaim cared much about it to begin with. There's enough inconsistent things between the games themselves, and the comics had even more things that blatantly contradicted the games.

what a shame too. I wish the Turok series took off. Not like how COD releases a game every year, but more like how Nintendo releases a new Zelda game once or twice every console and they're always good in their own rite.
