But seriously, it wasnt as bad as you think.

Actually, the gamepad support for this remastered version isn't half-bad, either. I was able to make the jumps in Level 3 with my Logitech Dual Action easily. The aiming sucks though because there's no comfortable acceleration curve like say, Halo 1 PC.
But it worked pretty well for its time.
Cant compare to the new controls though hehe.
What a time to be alive, having an N64 controller, work with your PC. :D
i could only play it by holding the controller in a special way
left hand on the small center part, right hand on the right main part
and then remap some functions
it was... ok... but yes pretty frustrating... hahah
i would mostly run backwards once a dino attacked me so i could focus on aiming
and if that didnt work, then strafe in circles while they chased me and then aim
all the jumping and falling to death was the most frustating though...
the controls were actually ok...
unlimited lifes or more safe points would have made this a MUCH better experience on N64
but back then the gaming world was still in the firm believe that gamers need to be PUNISHED by failing a challange, and if you didnt have to spend 30mins to retrace your steps to get back to where you were when you failed, the game was TOO EASY, and this kind of punishment would MAKE THE GAME MORE FUN in the end.
i totally disagree, and history has proven this approach wrong luckily :)

Enemies take 10 headshots to kill, you only take 1 to die. Worse, the blue-hatted guards take 30 headshots to kill! It's a level of difficulty so ridiculous and so tedious (notice the way it's played) that you'd have to be a literal masochist who gets boners from pain to even want to attempt it.
To be fair, that's not an actual difficulty level. It's using an unlocked difficulty level to create your own. I usually doubled the enemy accuracy and reaction, reduced my health by 50% and increased the guards by 25% to increase the challenge. Turning everything up to max is just ridiculous.
But yeah, I really enjoyed the way Turok 1 controlled with the N64 controller, it felt fluid. And using the automap to tell your position on platforms made jumps pretty easy when you got the hang of them. It really was a joy to play. The same can't be said for Turok 2 on N64 due to the framerate feeling akin to walking through a waste deep swamp, but Turok 1 played pretty well.
I think Free Radical (former Goldeneye team) nailed the Rare formula with the Timesplitters games, namely the second one.
9 out of 10 deaths were me falling to death, not from a fight...
the mini map was TINY, and for some jumping sequences the rocks were so small they looked like a single pixel on the mini map...
and i thought it was kinda ridiculous to have those awesome graphics, but in the end you play half of the game focusing on the mini map where you, a white triangle, is moving and jumping from white circle to white circle, which looked a lot like ASTEROIDS lol

it was fun
i loved it
but fluid?
jumps were easy?
joy to play?
i couldnt disagree more personally
